Movies of 2018
I’ve just realised I’ve watched a lot of new movies this year. Is it just me or does 2018 feel like an unusually long and full year? Feels like there’s been more than usual amount of stuff in the world.
Anyhoo...
Black Panther -starting with the most “culturally significant” film of 2018. Err...its alright, but if it wasn’t Black Panther it would be just another mid-rank MCU movie. The plot is a bit broken and the villain’s plan is pretty stupid. And Battle-Rhinos are fucking stupid. An American idea of Afro-futurism. I often wonder what actual Africans think of it. 6/10.
BlacKkKlansman – Bit of a return to form for Spike Lee, enjoyed this. 7/10.
Mission Impossible: Fallout – Tom Cruise is finally starting to look his age. It’s OK, but the last one was really good so this disappoints a bit by comparison. 6/10
Avengers Infinity War – I notice people are now starting to criticise this a bit as overstuffed and not as good as they thought, but fuck it, I loved it and can’t wait to see how they undo The Snappening. 8/10
Ant-Man and The Wasp – Last of this year’s MCU films. Easily the funniest and Michael Pena shouldn’t make me laugh but he does. 7/10
Venom – Not as terrible as I expected it to be, but still pretty bad. Tom Hardy is good, but there’s barely a plot. 5/10
Spider-Man Into The Spiderverse – Saw this at the weekend. Don’t be put off by the fact its animated. If you actually ever read or liked comics, go and see this, because its the nearest thing to an actual comic you’ll ever see on screen. Visually its absolutely stunning, and the plot is decent enough (especially if you’ve ever actually read any comics) and its properly funny in places, but the visuals are the real reason to watch it. 9/10.
Incredibles 2 – I didn’t enjoy it as much as the first one (14 years ago!) but it was good in parts. 6/10
Coco – Hated it. First Pixar movie I really didn’t like, and the kids weren’t keen either. 4/10
Teen Titans GO! To The Movies – Funny as fuck, another movie for the comic nerds. SLAAAADE! 7/10.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri – Sam Rockwell is brilliant in this, one of the best things he’s ever done, and I like him in lots of things. 7/10
Tomb Raider – I literally can’t remember the plot or anything about it. 2/10
The Predator – Oh dear, this should have been good; Shane Black is a decent director and a fucking great writer, but this is just a mess. 3/10.
First Man – Loved this, even though I find Ryan Gosling quite bland normally. Probably my film of the year, just 9/10.
Hotel Artemis – From the trailer I was expecting something John Wick-esque, but it turned out to be not very interesting and predictable. 5/10
Lady Bird – Despite all the plaudits I was a bit bored. It took me two goes to watch it. 5/10
I, Tonya – This was great. Very black, very funny. 7/10
The Shape of Water – I liked the setting and the aesthetic, but the actual film left me a bit cold. 6/10.
Deadpool 2 – Actually a better plot than the first one, and the Skydiving scene and Hitler baby alone make it worth the admission. 8/10
Bohemian Rhapsody – I enjoyed this. It isn’t quite the movie I would have made (It was a bit too light touch), but the music was great, Remi Malek absolutely nailed it, and the synchronicity of the Mike Myers’ cameo was a joy. 8/10
Solo A Star Wars Story – How can they make me not care about Han Solo? I don’t know, but they’ve done it. Bored. 5/10
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom – Utterly tedious. Volcanoes and Dinosaurs and its totally fucking boring. 3/10
Ready Player One – I liked this a lot more than the critics did. The geek culture references were oddly frozen in the 80s but other than that it was good fun. 7/10.
Red Sparrow – I’m not sure what I was expecting with this, a bit more Black Widow and a bit less...grubby, I guess. It was well acted but not great. 6/10,
Rampage – Shite, but actually kind of fun shite. 6/10,
Equalizer 2 – Generic. Also seemed to take a long time to get going. 6/10
Sicario 2: Day of The Soldado – A lot more by the numbers than the first one and a wee bit “Murica-Fuck Yeah”. I will probably watch the inevitable sequel. 6/10
Skyscraper – Absolute bollocks, dull and terrible CGI. 2/10
Tag – quirky, based on a true story and a good cast. It was quite funny, but not as laugh out loud as the trailer. 6/10
The Post – All very Aaron Sorkin and dialog led. Also turns out The Post’s role in the real story was nowhere near as significant as this movie makes it (nothing like say, The Boston Globe in Spotlight or The Post itself in All The President’s Men). Its OK, but ultimately a bit forgettable. 6/10
Molly’s Game – Very good, another true story and pretty fascinating. And I like Jessica Chastain in most things she’s in. 8/10,
12 Strong – Passes the time. Bit gung ho but that’s OK sometimes. 6/10/
The Commuter – Forgettable Liam Neeson flick (who really is getting a bit long in the tooth for this kind of thing) 4/10
Ralph Breaks The Internet – Some genuinely laugh out loud bits and some things that I really wish actually worked that way in real life (Nosemore is way more fun than Google) 7/10.
Still loads I haven’t seen; A Quiet Place, that new one about Cheney etc.
