Try not to faint. It's a gaming-related question in General* :)

When playing FPS's I tend to wang the mouse sensitivity right up. E.G. if it's a scale of 0-100 I tend to play at around 80 when most games set the default at about 30.

I like the twitch action. Move my mouse about an inch and I've done a 180 and am ready to shoot.

Played against some fucker on tribes tonight who was getting three times the kills of everyone else (using the hitscans I've been avoiding like the plague). He reckons he's on a really low sensitivity setting - about 15 (though he could turn on a sixpence).

Now, I could never be arsed to learn about uber-geek mousery. DPI's etc.. Maybe I should?

What settings do you use? Do you think the hardware makes that much difference? If you think yes, what do you have?

:)

DPI is very important, the higher the DPI the more your mouse tracks every single motion - even the very small off line motions you make.

High DPI for very slow accurate work like photoshop can be an asset, but for twitch gaming it's not the best.
Turn your DPI down to 800 and increase your sensitivity back to where it felt like, gaurantee you'll feel a lot smoother.

Low sensitivity is generally considered better in slower games, you need to be able to 180 in a single motion at least though.

I keep gaming sensitivity at default and my mouse has three cumfy buttons for speeds;

3 - Around 800 dpi(deep penetration injections?) i think, which is as fast as escorting your GF through a shoestore. On a saleday. And her payday. (cause i'll be f*cked if i pay for HER shoes).
2 - Around 1200 dpi(double peepee intrusions?), which is my comfort zone. Fast enough to point my phallic symbol at a thing i want dead without them phallicing me first, yet not too fast so i can actually nagivate the room without fainting and falling off my chair.
1 - Around the 2000 f*cking bends, stole my granny, packed her into weetabix boxes in tiny chunks, booked a trip to aruba, went there, had a one night stand, back for home for tea and biscuits beforel i've managed to move the mouse about half an inch.

So, in short; he has a low sensitivity in game, big in mouse.

800
1500
2400

I can change them on the fly with my mouse, Logitech G500. I rarely use the 2400 though. Sensitivity is usually set to 100

Out of interest, who was it in Tribes?

I play on 15 in Tribes btw with a 2000 DPI mouse.

Ignoring the associated byproducts, DPI works like a multiplier.

eg Someone on 10 sens on 1600 dpis will get the same mouse movement speed as someone on 20 sens on 800 dpi. ( assuming linear increase in the game sens ).

The difference between them is the degree to which the mouse will pick up very small movements when moving the mouse.
Try doing both, see which you prefer as it's mostly stylistic.

That said - you probably want to turn mouse acceleration off, as it's pure aids for gaming when you want to go past the derp MW/BF level.
Yes some very good players play w/ maccel on but they are the exception and not the rule.

Your comfort on sensitivity/dpi will depend on whether you use a palm, claw or hybrid mouse grip ( palm usually = low sens, claw = higher sens - generalisation ).

Something else you want to adjust is ingame FOV, try 100-110 it helps a lot.

If you're not playing on 120 FoV you're essentially playing with an eyepatch. :p

Take a loose grip and move slowly at first. Sensitivity can be increased after repeated usage. Only crank up to the max when the PE lesson starts...

Wait, what were we talking about ?
