I use a USB modem and USB mouse, and I have the same problem

The modem cranks out, killing power to the USB ports... is this it?

God I hate that modem

It was making my computer crash to a BSoD like every 10mins with Win98.
I fixed that by going to WinXP...then it only crashed when playing a game for awhile.
Fixed that by getting a powered USB hub, plugging all other USB things (mouse, scanner, printer) into the hub, and the modem into the computer.
Works fine now.

I think there is a simpler way to solve your problem though.
Gimme 2 mins to remember
Ok, go the Device Manager, then down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers
There should be several: USB Root Hubs.
Bring up the properties for each one, and go into the Power Management tab.
Then uncheck the box for "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"
This should fix the problem.......in theory

you dont say what chipset, but if its VIA (and i say VIA cos it only seems to happen on these boards) then its cos the USB is just plain shit. i dont know why happens, but it happens to about 80% of people who have a VIA board - the USB just cuts out. the ony way i found to stop it was to buy a USB PCI extension card.

Ardwan that does indeed fix the problem (in Win2k at least).
Used to happen to me most times I tried to start HL and from time to time while playing DAoC until I found that fix :)

Its not a problem restricted to VIA chipsets either, I use an old BX motherboard... still probably the most compatible chipset on the planet
