I just thought I'd point out that this game has started it's open beta today for anyone that is interested: open beta | Mortal Online

I haven't really been keeping much up to date with this game although I thought it looked pretty cool about a year ago when I first heard about it, and since then I have been keeping half and eye on it.

I'm gonna have a download and try it out either tonight or tomorrow :)

I guess a very basic idea of it for anyone who hasn't heard of it yet is that it is kinda a similar idea to darkfall online.

I've had beta access since it came out (block A) and purchased the special edition on impulse.

It's shit, don't even bother. Even though it's beta- full version will also be shit, unless they manage to fix alot of issues

you don't have to pay to play the open beta, I didn't. Just ignore that screen where they try to sell you things.
After my short play around with it, I'm not impressed.

Another one for the "don't buy at release, wait 6 months and see how it goes" pile imo.

Make that 2 years instead

More of a "if this game survives more than 2 years, i might take a look" type affair? ;)

Honestly it looks a pretty terrible game at the moment, i didn't think it would be possible to make a game worse than Darkfail, but already this one is a contender :(

Similar premise but apparently poorly implemented.

Darkfall is a box, but not sandbox, more, box with a few grains of grey sand.

Amazing when people actually buy in to the term "sandbox" when it is applied to a game with no content, the worst skill system of all time, terrible twitch combat, original Doom graphics, animations and combat "system" and honestly, nothing to do but bug abuse, cheat, hack and gank.

Whats laughable is they describe Mortal as a "next gen mmorpg"........if this is next gen, i'll stick to last gen games thanks muchly :)

Lots of people love Darkfall and it seems to have improved alot the last year it has been in business.

Mortal Online is just complete fail.

It does appeal to pvpers. There really aren't many games these days that do. Although now they have begun implementing basic newbie protection rules which sort of flys in the face of the game premise it'll be interresting to see if they ever wind-up with a trammel-like situation. Only time will tell.

DF has improved a bit, but Aventurine are pretty hopeless. There are still players blantantly flaunting cheats, exploits and hacks who have still not been dealt with. Recently they have started banning the more obvious players, but they aren't fixing the problems and many players cheat without any reporcussions.

Sad fact that it got so easy to cheat and exploit in Darkfall then. Anyways, worth trying at some point, just don't think it's that time yet.

I guess there needs to be *some* newbie safety net to keep them playing, which is in the games own interest. Without newbies MMO's die given a little time (only bitter veterans left) :p

Agree with jox here. there needs to be some form of newbie protection even in the hardcore pvp games.

Oh, i totally agree, but it flys in the face of what people like about Darkfall, no ganking rules. This is the thing that players should enforce, players should protect players, not immunity timers.

Once they start implmenting rules and restrictions it's a slippery slope. I am old enough to remember trammel, while it didn't bother me much, i do remember what it caused, i just hope Aventurine are as well.

Protect new players and risk alienating the older ones.....it's a tricky rope to walk.

true Tallen, but either wich way the griefer gets something out of it, either emotionally or other ingame rewards.

so they usually tend to have more patience then others.

and ofc, if one player are TO heavily guarded they just run off to someone that isnt, so its still a win - win for them.

griefers needs to have rules against them, otherwise there wouldn't be anyone else playing.

i really doubt theres actually that many players that truly loves it.

they play it because its the only "true" hardcore fantasy pvp mmo out there.

pretty sure that if any of the bigger dev studios would make one ppl would ditch DF like last weeks undies...

I would argue that DF is not hardcore at all, in fact it's pure carebear compared to games like EvE....but then EvE is not a fantasy mmo and you are talking about fantasy mmo's. Is there a "hardcore" fantasy mmo? I can't think of any modern ones which fit that mould and it makes me wonder if there is a market for such a game?

There is no real penalty for dying in DF, full loot is a joke because the loot is so damned easy to get most players have a ton of it.

OFC i can only comment on what the game was like when i played, i understand it may have changed recently, but my experience was macro, gank, macro, gank, zerg, zerg, zerg, macro, gank, beat up inanimate buildings for no really good reason, zerg some more, macro some more, smacktalk a bit then go gank again.

aye, its the reason i wrote "fantasy" :)

i know EvE is probably the ONLY properly hardcore PVP mmo out there, but DF is, despire its issues, as hardcore as you can get when it comes to fantasy mmo's :)
