More Ping woes

Well, I'm ready to give up.

I've tried the BarrysWorld guide and the Upset-something guide for tweaking to get half-decent pings and I've determined that it is not possible. Even if Gamespy pings a server at 180, I join and stay between 400-600. Is there ANY possible way to play this game online for those of us who don't have cable or DSL??????????????

Ack!

Try getting a good modem (not a winmodem or anything like that), and call up your phone provider and ask them to turn the gain up on your phoneline...

Any recommendations on WHICH modem? I`m looking into the USR Gaming Modem, but if anyone has other ideas...

If you know them can you post your current modem details (manufacturer and model) and/or the modem driver that windows is showing as in use (example, Rockwell/Conexant 56K SoftModem). Can you also post the ISPs you've tried and I'll do my best to help.

Requ!em: Modem is a USR 56k Voice PCI modem, and I am using the most recent and accurate drivers for it. The only ISP I've tried is my normal ISP (FastNet). I can't really try any others because I really don't want to spend another 15 a month to try them out (I live in the USA btw, otherwise I'd use barrydial). Any suggestion?

I think the problem can be put down to playing on BW servers with a 56k modem from america? :)

I play on other american servers as well, sometimes with worse pings.

Ahh well you see there's the clue - "other american servers" - BW isn't like your other americans servers.

They're all in the UK.

You are misuderstanding: EVERY SINGLE SERVER I PLAY ON IS TERRIBLE. Q3 is notorious (in reviews at least) for having terrible network code. Every server I play on gives terrible pings, even if it pings 160 in gamespy, I get 300-500 in game. American, UK, Canadian; all servers give bad pings.

Is your USR internal modem a Winmodem?

If you're using Windows9x/SE/ME try to match your MTU to your ISP MTU to help with upstream data throughput ( http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/ConnectionFAQ/OptimizeNetwork.htm and http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/ConnectionFAQ/OptimizeNetworkme.htm ).

USR Sportster modems are usually very tolerant of bad line conditions so try disabling error control as that'll reduce ping ~40-50 on Sportster models. Re-enable error control if you have problems. Adding S10=120 to any modem string you use will help with disconnections.

If your connection is unstable with frequent retrains or stalls in data transfer then try to limit connection speed. Example, if you connect at 48000 but have stalls, phonejacks or timeouts then try forcing to 46000 ( http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/ConnectionFAQ/USRModemStrings.htm )

You could also try adjusting Quake3 netcode settings, with 1.27 Stac/Microsoft compression no longer allows you to use a rate higher than normal for a given connection speed so rate settings need to be adjusted. If your upstream connection speed is low, V90 connects are limited to 33600 upstream even though they're upto 56000 downstream, then try a cl_maxpackets setting of 25. Note that v92 upstream connections are usually higher so you can try higher maxpackets. Suggested settings ( http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/Quake3/connection.html and http://ucguides.savageuniverse.com/ConnectionFAQ/GameSpecific.htm )

are u setting rate, snaps and max packets thru quake 3? try varying the levels till you find one that lowers your ping.
i use the following:
// NET KIT
seta com_maxfps "45"
seta com_humkmegs "128"
seta cl_maxpackets "25"
seta cl_packetdup "1"
seta snaps "20"
seta rate "4200"
seta cg_perdictitems "1"

thats for my 56k modem which i have limited the connex speed to 43,333 bps. i get a nice round 120 ish ping on servers. ;)
