I heard that it was getting messed up by future attempts to run it via wormholes and rips in space and time.

Or a bird from the past dropped a seed into the machine.

Maybe its just shit.

It's one of the most complex machines ever built by mankind, course it's gonna have a few teething problems :p

they've fucked reality already then. Yahoo and the BBC have been catapulted into different dimensions.

I hope to god im in the one where I bump into Nicole Kidman and she picks me as her sex slave.....

Really? Any woman on the planet and you chose Nicole Kidman?

Each to their own...

people are coming back from the future to sabotage it. surely I am not the only one to realize this?

Well its either her or the Olsen twins, and I havent clarified the laws on that kind of thing in this dimension yet, so Im playing safe.

in a parallel universe you could be the sex slave of the Krankies

I agree, Lol at that last sentence.

Breaking down all over the place? My guess would be the LHC uses Windows as an OS ;)

Crankies' sex slave....now that's not nice Lamp. :puke:

Well theyve been smashing atoms all day or whatever it is they do so it doesnt sound like they are having too many problems. Said today was the biggest collision yet

You should have seen my desk today.
22" screen + 19" screen + 15.4" laptop for dualscreen goodness. Multiple windows, multiple graphs, multiple event graphics and the live stream playing in my headphones.

What bothers me is that I understand quite a bit of what is actually going on at CERN even though I never formally studied physics. I've always had a strong interest in the sciences (I've worked in a number of labs) and quantum physics is just one of those things I've kept on reading about for personal interest.

For example, 40-60 collision events were being picked up each second inside the detectors and that's considered SLOW! The operators can store ALL the data coming from the detectors up to about 800-900Hz. Once the rate goes higher than that then they have to cherry pick the "best" events and dump the "boring" events. The machine itself is capable of running at about 2000Hz when at full speed and full energy (eventually 14TeV).

To the people questioning the expense of it all, if the research eventually leads to a practical purpose then it will have been worth it. We can't even imagine some of those practical purposes right now. Some of the more fantastic ideas include being able to diminish mass in a given material, how to exclude or even repel gravity, and even how to convert matter at the subatomic level... or alchemy as they use to call it. It's all sci-fi right now, but who knows what the future brings. THAT is why I'm excited about the whole project. :)

The machine has already resulted in industry applications such as better and more efficient super conductors, better manufacturing techniques (getter and palladium thin film coating being done with less waste), new methods of construction for piping (they made a new type of vacuum sealed joint), so on and so forth
