Been away a bit so just had a look around, the swearing and vile language you mods allow on these forums, reflects badly on the game think you should wake up.

Arguements fine but 12 year olds just blasting away with Fuk U etc to everything it is truely pitiful.

If you report a post I will look into it. I'm not employed by BW or GOA, I do this just to try and be helpful, and I've actually been flamed for editting out language before as well. Its nice that you guys are reliably unpredictable :) I have made it clear on several occasions that if you want to contact me, to pm me or use the report this thread to a moderator. I work pretty much full time, and so I don't have the time to read through every single thread.

So rather than just griping here, can you contact me with a thread you find problematic?

Thank you.

Damini.

If you look closer you will see that a) I'm not crying, and b) I'm incredibly cool, and a small female version of the Fonze :)

This is the way I wish to view my childhood in hindsight. Any attempts to shatter this illusion must be presented to my psychiatrist and not me, as the results could be devastating.

Back On Topic...

Maybe a general consensus could be formed on what is and isn't reasonable swearing? No BW forum has monitored swearing before, and this is the first forum to have swearing even slightly monitored. You are complaining because I haven't edited out every swear word, here is a quote from someone complaining because I did;

I vote for a complete non inteference policy from the moderators

The boards were made originally with swearing enabled, let us swear. I'm sure everyone over the age of 12 has heard swear words before

The best way for moderators to moderate is ignore the board...or this could become like those dreadful VN boards where people are afraid to launch personal attacks ;) And if you mention the word flame the thread gets locked..

So since the moderation of language was bought in soully to pacify the people forcibly moved here from the other forum, maybe you can put your heads together and come up with an official line you want to propose before I get indefinately immersed in flames. (not saying I'll tow it, but I can certainly look)

Damned if I do and damned if I don't. What joyous fun.

Well, for one, I don't think it's necessary to use the f-word, or that other word that rhymes with bunt, and refers to a certain part of the female anatomy.

Perhaps a general rule could be that if it's allowed in open chat in DAoC without the filter off, then it's allowed here. Surely the same amount of intelligence it takes to play DAoC, could be used when discussing it?

Sure, if everyone follows that. But do you see the amount of man hours to read through every post in order to vet them, and then the time to adjust each post, then the flames summoned because of interference? I personally don't have the time (nor, if I'm frank, the inclination) to do that. I will edit out the c word wherever I find it within this forum, and if there is swearing in a thread title I will ask a super moderator to edit it out. If there is excessive swearing within a single posting I will edit it out. If someone complains about a post I will look into it, and most likely edit it.

If someone has recurrent bad language, put them on ignore. You can rest assured you aren't missing any profound contribution to the grand scheme of things anyway :) Statistically, its likely to be one of the following statements riddled with poor grammar and random cussing anyway;

1) I WAS TEH GRAY AND JOE BLOGGS TEH KILLED MEH

2) JOE BLOGGS AER TEH CHEAT

3) ALBION/MID/HIB AER TEH CHEATS

4) GOA ARE TEH SUXOR :puke:

So just read the ensuing flame retorts and guess what the starting statement was. All the fun of the fair but pre watershed.

I am not however Barryworld's person bleeper. Anyone that has messaged me with a problem (*I hope* :) ) will tell you I answer them quickly and deal with the situation as best I can. I go around deleting threads that have been started by accident, threads that are pure spam or pimping, redirecting threads, and so on. This is what I do as a moderator.

Sooo, thats my stance.

Similar to Damini. I read the boards at least once but usually twice a day, and a couple more scans of the general board, looking for spam, adverts, excessive abuse, duplicate posts/threads, things in the wrong place etc. I'd rather not close an argument thread that has some merit in its point, but sometimes the point is lost a couple of pages in, flames ensue and it's necessary to do so.

As mentioned above, the BW policy is to allow swearing so I've no problem with it if not done excessively just for the sake of it. For every person who'd rather the boards were swearing free I'd imagine there'd be at least two who appreciate the freedom of speach to do so, because if used in moderation (pun!) I think the occasional swearing can work well in expression.

That being said, I let some stuff slip through if it fits reasonably well into the context of the thread and it's part of a post that's making a decent point.

Hmm ok what is so upsetting in this thread for you, just a post by a mature player who is also a father concerned at some of the illiterate vile posts made in some other threads. Now if that causes you to get so irate I pity you :)

As for PM's sure I am gonna waste my time sending personal messages to people like that ;)

my 2p worth :

swearing for the sake of swearing is pointless and childish

swearing in the form of a personal insult/attack towards an individual is unacceptable

swearing as a general emotional expression is ok

Thing is that swearing serves a purpose - in real life it allows easy expression of emotion or provides a way to add emphasis in addition to the plethora of tonal and physical cues we add to spoken language. Online it should have a similar purpose - bereft of the body language & emotion that we can convey when speaking we need a means to add emphasis and emotion to text.

Problem is that overuse of swearing lessens it's impact, certain words need to be saved for when they're really nessecary, for the worst of the worst situations, and by their required scarcity of use they become deeply shocking words. "C*nt" for example is a knife of a word but for no reason other than that it is reserved, generally, for situations that demand the worst of swear words, there's nothing inherently offensive about the word nor what it describes. Yet it becomes meaningless when it's reduced to a commonly used word - without it what other word is there for when you really need a big swearword?

On these forums the issue is the degree of offense any given person is likely to take when faced with any given word, and that's something that will change from person to person. All age ranges read & post here and all types of people, so there's a fairly broad scope for offending someone with almost any expletive you care to use.

So what I'm saying is a) if you are offended by the language in someone's post stop and think - they may not think they're being particularly offensive by their standards. If they are being deliberately offensive then it's up to you to decide what you wanna do, but in the scheme of things is it really important? It's a bunch of forums about some online game... and if you're a parent and are worried your kids are going to read rude words then either block the site from them or just accept that they're going to learn these words one day anyway, and b) if you're someone who regularly uses swearwords in your posts stop and think - are they really nessecary? Are they words that are no longer deeply offensive to you because you overuse them? Do you still have a knife of a word to use when you really need it or have you blunted it through overuse?

Er.. I didn't intend for that to turn into an essay, sorry :)

Put a list here of all the words you don't want used and then we know which ones are too offensive. :)

Seriously though, I don't mind swearing at all, and I've not seen that much of it here (but then I don't read every thread written)

I will say that I will take more notice of a flame which explains the points of the problem, rather than an all our purile attempt with swearing all over the post.
