Modem problems

OK,
so my dad has a MSI 6160 bog standard mobo running a Celeron 500 cpu and 256mb sdram.
Before he installed XP his modem worked fine (internal, PCI job), but now it wont dial. When you query the modem from device manager, its all ok, so the board is talking to the modem, but when you try to connect, there's no dial tone. Tried a new Diamond Supra Express 56internal, and its the same. But.......it dials ok with my external Supra Express!!

Could it be a problem with the PCI bus.? Ive tried a couple of other PCI cards (not modems) and they worked fine.

Any ideas??

the old MSi boards are dodgy as fuck

i normally am somewhat of a "MSi rock, their boards are stable" but you have to forget about the old 6xxx series models. their problems were bad back then (i've got an old MS-6167 board running a 550 K7 athlon)

only real thing i can think of is to stick the modem into your 2nd PCI slot and remove every other PCI card (unless its using a PCI graphics card, keep that in then :p )

give that a try, either 2nd PCI slot or 3rd PCI slot (i'd be more swayed towards using PCI 3 for modem, but we'll use PCI2's bus mastering to see if it solves it)

only other thing i can think of, is that its installed the wrong PCI steering driver and other assorted PCI enduced drivers for WinXP,

oh, and dont try searching the MSi forums, they are useless for anything except bitch-fights
