hi there. Im looking to get a new modem very soon and would be grateful to anyone for any advice/tips that you can offer. Price range around £70. Currently use win98 o/s

Also, at the moment i have a USR 56k Voice internal PCI modem, i also use a freecall ISP. The problem i have is that i cant set cl_maxfps above 30 otherwise i get phonejack. Could anyone tell me has this got to do with the ISP or do i have a cack modem (i think so) or even worse is it both (as i have tried other ISP's and as soon as its set over 30 the same thing happens).

Can anyone help :) Thanks in advance

What sort of graphics card you got ?
Used to have the same problem as you a couple of month ago and changed from a Voodoo 2 to a TNT2 Ultra and this was a big improvement .
Used to think it was my modem or isp but a new graphics card did the trick .
£120 though .

i have a voodoo2 and a 2/3d card but i've used isdn on the same pooter with dircon (isp) and had in excess of 60 fps no problems whatsoever. So i know my system can handle it. It seems the bottleneck so to speak is either the modem or isp.

Thanks for your input though. Anything else.

Also i have to get a new modem anyhow so does NE1 know which is best ?

Diamond Supra Express 56iPRO - PCI internal hardware modem, 35 nikker :)

Not worth spending any more on a modem at this time cuz you will probably have broadband within a year... the diamond modem is a gem though, pings from 110-145 on a quality isp.

tug if you come back? Or anyone pleae feel free.

Someone recomended the external version of the modem your suggesting (slighty dearer which i dont mind), saying that although it (56i) was very good for the extra 15-20 i would be better off getting the E version.

opinions peoples

i also looked back through this boards posts and peole always seem divided on which is best :( .
/me getting more confused

Thats fine too... basically the 56iPRO and 56ePRO both perform more or less equal... choose which ya want :)

Just to throw a spanner in the works....

I have an ancient LT Win Modem. 56k but wasn't supposed to be v90. They sorted that out with the newest drivers; heard some waffling about coincidence of arcitecture or some other 'flew reet over my head' stuff.

Get a ping tween 110 and 145, just like Tug gets with his diamond.
It's internal pci and it'll cost you a whopping (wait for it) 7 quid.

:)

U must have a fast CPU tho... to get pings like that with a *shock horror!* winmodem must take some horsepower ;)

Maybe my Celeron II 566@1003MHz can do it... :D

One last post :) Thx for all your advice etc. I went and bought the diamond supra express pro EXTERNAL and im absolutely chuffed. Even though £50 it is great, can get server limit FPS and RATE and my quakeing is fun again. It took me half an hour to get use to the frames after having to cap it at 30. Anyway, once again Thanks all

Im prolly one of the most knoledgable persons there is on mode,s having trawled the whole net about stuf on modems.

I have an external modem, a cheapo 30 quid v90 job, and it goves sub 130 pings in HL all the time, as low as 98 in q3 sometimes, Its not really the modem that makes the difference, but more likly how the puter is set up and stuff. But the ISP is prolly another main reason.

Tis a general rule of thumb, if you want big performace from a winmodem, you need a powerful CPU.

Go and ask some l33t expert - I just play with pooters and learn a fair bit as I go along.

Ew ya, we all have to speak like this to demonstrate one's intelligence. Upmost respect to the Queens' language, I am so intelligent old sire.

The guy is right, most of the time tweaking your computer will most likely give you the performance improvement you're looking for. I didn't see your intelligence working well Tug, trying to tell me I have a 1ghz Athlon or something.

;)

ladies ladies calm down :)

Breathe in, breathe out, breathe in, breathe out

one question what exactly do u mean by tweaking your comp?

do you mean registry settings or tcp/ip settings or ? :)

as i tried that with me old one and just made it playable (from being unplayable)

thanks again

Sounds like its a combination of your isp/modem.

Get a Diamond Supra modem, excellent for the money. Not actually used one myself, used to have a USR Sportster before ISDN, but friends had great results with them.

Get a decent ISP. All free ISPS are CRAP for gaming, forget about them.

I use Claranet/Nildram for gaming and FreeISP for downloading, and IRC llama shenanigans.

G'luck.

hehe thought this one was done and dusted :)
I did get a supra 56e (look above m8ty) and your friend is correct. They are very good. Also my Freecall isp is very good considering it cost me £40 to sign up 6 months ago and i havent paid a penny since (thats going from £250 upwards, quarterly phone bills on ISDN, yep im a tight bugger :) ). With the problem i had i wasnt sure if it was the ISP or the modem but having spoke with someone else using the same isp & having bought a new modem i discovered it was infact the old almost winny modem. It was the FPS (which in Q2 is vital as you probably know) which really frustrated me. Anyways its all cured now but thanks very much for your input :)

Wouldn't write off all free isp's. I'm fine with mine for the mo (ping tween 125 and 145 like I says b4).

Ain't just 'free' either, it's unmetered and has no subscription fee. Completely free. Not gonna tell ya what it is tho, it's busy enough as it is :)
