Modem/FPS Problem

been having problems going LD alot so i decided to use another modem...now when i play daoc with Diamond SupraNax 56k USB the FPS decreases, and yes i have checked to see if its the same on the old one and its not fps is fine. Afaik modems didn't effect fps but obvisouly it is so anybody got any ideas on why? and how to fix it.

Means u bought yourself a "softmodem".
Softmodems are verry cheap modems where the modem only does the transmitting of data over the telephone line.

The actual decoding from analog -> digital, digital -> analog happens through software on your pc.
This decoding takes CPU time and thus your pc has less CPU power to transmit data to your GFX card and thus your FPS is lower.

Your previous modem would been a "hardmodem" where the decoding happens in the modem itself.

Agree, but with a quite high tech pc (1,2+ Ghz, 512MB DDR, n GF3ti or similars) ur comp shouldnt have ne problems dealing with the decoding thingy and a not very system requirements strict game like DAOC.
I played the game not long time ago with a 1600+ XP, 256MB n a TNT2 Ultra with a Genius pci modem n didnt have ne problems with FPS (except at overcrowded zones).

A reason for ur problem might be some kind of drivers which are in conflict with the game.............

3 Gig athlon 1 gig ram 4600ti 128 meg with "softmodem" = slowww
as above with external "hard modem" = fine
both 56k / V90's

I cant say u rlly need a better conection than a 56K for this game, mabye on relic raids but apart from that....
My bro and I share a 56K by lan and RvR goes soo smothly
