Hi people. This is driving me crazy so please help = )

Im on Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2 on a Ambient HaM modem with BTinternet. When ever I disconnect due to my 2 hour period, I redial but it gets stuck on 'Veryfying username and password'

But when ever I CLICK disconnect the icon never disappears saying im offline and some programs like ICQ stay connected.

Please help as this is killing me since im a heavy internet user = )

Is that a winmodem? If so the driver might be knackered/crap

Controllerless (Host Accelerated) Linux- or Windows-only V.90/V.92 PCI Chipset

Host Accelerated means it's WinModem. This means it shit. To save money on manufacturing costs, they basically make the modem-card itself do a lot less work, and the software driver in windows does all the work (hence, winmodem). This means it uses your CPU alot, meaning you get shit pings in games.

Also, if the driver is shite, it'll cause problems such as you're having right now.

I'd either a) suggest you purchase a decent hardware modem or

b) try a different driver from: http://www.modem-help.freeserve.co.uk/chips/amb563.html (scroll down to the Windows bit - all the drivers there should work on your card, even though they are different brands - they all use the same chipset)

Yes, it would. Doesn't matter if you are on a quad 2ghz xeon machine. When you play games the cpu is cained at full capacity, meaning when it has to do work for yor cheap lazy modem, it either a) slows the game down a bitor b) makes your ping much higher. 9 times out of 10 it fucks your ping up

Similar subject, Perp (as you're da man wot can) I've got a software modem meself. Bought it recently cos it had the word 'hardware' in the decription, but no. I've been had.

Can you recommend a good internal hardware modem? I know the best way to guarantee hardware is to buy an external but dammit, I want it tucked away.

Thanks, fella.

Someguy,

If you remember, we had the same internal modem (Connexant HSP crap). dont know if you still have that but I purchased myself a new one.

Hayes Accura V92 Internal.

Compared to the Connexant this is superb. No more hangups, very few FEP and a lot more stable.

And my ping has decreased to a stable 150 ish (sometimes 120 on BW)

All for a measly 59 quid from PC world (I know my brother also bought the same one for 24 quid (BASTARD)
