Now lets raid the offices of all mobile phone companies in the EU just to check that the pricing is all nice and clear.

Now lets raid all the oil companies and insurance companies, ROFLOL I think not.

Well, hopefully it'll sort out some of the oddities of the price plans.

They did do it in Germany too - so it's not entirely picking on us.

No, insurance is not a rip-off, it's expensive, but there is a reason for that. The thing is, companies HAVE to make a profit to surivive, if insurance companies are paying out more than they take in, how the hell are they going to stay in business? Do you expect them to give you something for nothing?

What's really causing the problems of high premiums is people driving without insurance and car theft and vandalism.

hes right though

insurance has RECENTLY got very high because of personal claims

people claim for broken necks, dicks, brains, fingers... everything

and they blame it on one incident, that was minor...

Indeed Mr Buckley.

Insurance (like breakdown services) work by the numbers. What most of us pay for insurance wouldn't go particularly far if/when it came to an accident claim. When one of my neighbours drove into my car door at about 5mph (not massive damage) it cost £700 in repair costs - which is more than what I pay a year in insurance premium.

Insurance companies break even/make a profit by virtue of the fact that:
  • Car insurance is compulsory,
  • Many drivers go for years without making a claim
The reason insurance premiums are more expensive than they necessarily need to be is to take account - as Paul says - of the thousands of cases of write-offs, people driving without insurance (and crashing), car theft, etc. Unfortunately we all pay for the carelessness and inconsideration of the few, but that's how these things work - by the numbers.

Very few insurance companies made much money for the reasons stated above....personal claims....don't you just love how american were going, time for another Claims Direct advert.

While in Florida in 1998 I watched a little TV and nearly other advert was for companies like Claims Direct....We will sue someone if you were to stupid to look where you were going and walked in to a lamp post

Also the governemt was, not sure if its gone through, going to make insurance companies pay the hospital fees of the person at fault in a car accident.
