So, i'm gathering info on MMO games and the like. Now i know quite a few and am considered a "mmo" expert here. Just cause i play them way too much :p

But i would appreciate, incase i missed some, any links to any MMO(past present or future) homesites. Thanks.(even UO, AO any...)

Follow up question to the really inthusiasitics..schrt...: Now that the handhelds, like PSP and the, maybe not so crappy, n-gage QD are coming to the market, what wold you like to see in them concerning MMO? Perhaps a notification when others are online? Message system from game to handheld to game? Your views on this even working?

All help appreciated.

Try this site : http://www.mmorpg.com/

It has a nice game list....

Oh, and about your second question...
If I quit the game I QUIT the game. I don't want notifications about in game events when I'm not playing.

I took a look at the list of games on that site and there seems to be a notable absence: the prototype MMOs by which I mean MUD (the original Multi User Dungeon and all it's copies).

It could be argued that these early games don't fit the criteria of a modern MMO, of course thousands of concurrent connections were just not possible with the technology of the day, but these games paved the way for what we see today (my opinon :D) and they certainly were... FUN (the MOST important thing). If you are interested in the various issues of multiplayer game mechanics then one of the original authors of MUD - Richard Bartle - has written some very interesting papers on the subject...

http://www.mud.co.uk/richard/archive.htm

I recommend reading some of the articles (there are even a few published academic papers in there, Richard Bartle is a serious intellect in the field of multiplayer gaming) and you will soon find yourself drawing either parallel or direct comparisons to current MMOs. Some things don't change, mostly people...

On the subject of interactivity with mobile devices, I see a spectrum of possible responses. I think the range of answers to your question are as broad as the range of devices: in that what is possible is limited by the technology of the device (highly variable as we know).

At one end of the spectrum you could have a fully featured mobile game client, a DAoC in your pocket, running on something analogous to the latest handheld (think XDA2). In terms of the technology to do this (and most importantly, the network infrastructure to support it) I do not think we are very far away from this as a feasible possibility.

The other end of the spectrum would be a drastically stripped down client capable of supporting only basic functions (due to the limiting factors of it's more basic hardware/network capabilities). Such a device might offer a text only interface, which could still support chat channels (guild chat for example) or offer a simple interface to take care of routine maintenance of your account (paying your house rent, moving items into/out of vaults/cm's, trading with other players) as well perhaps providing you with alerts (maybe your friend logged in?)

One of the interesting things done with MUD2 in recent history was to offer a game client using a web page.

I've thought of these issues since I am out of the country for 5-6 weeks soon, and not able to access my account to pay my rent! I'll be on a ship sailing around Antarctica, I'll have network access but no game client... Guess I'll have to ask a friend to drop 20g on my house, in exchange for :drink:

Just you wait until WoW!!! I'll steal all your pets.....
......if they ever stop nerfing rogues tho.... :(

Anyway....

It would depend on the type of game.
What use would it be to get a message on your mobile because the stinkin' albs/hibs/mids are knocking on your relic doors ;)

In the "future" there will be a new class of online games. Not even a game, but some bizzare gimick fresh out of Japan aimed at mobile network users(phones, handheld consoles, PPC etc). It'll be bigger than pokemon and piss over the PC gaming market.

If you want to look at the online gaming market in general, that's where the biggest change will happen. When the mobile-phone gaming scene evolves, it's going to explode. --- in my opinion anyway, I hate phones, my mobile doesn't take incoming phonecalls. If anyone phones my house I answer like I'm pissed off and it's worked! no one but the unwary phone me anymore and they soon learn their lesson. :x

Mobile rpg's are out allready, pocket kingdoms for the ngage.

More on the way, you could just have a cut down DAOC client that just allowed xping in mobile only areas, the memory for the game is no problem with huge memory cards getting cheaper all the time.
Playing over mobile networks is no problem, as I keep mentioning I play DAOC , well pve only over GPRS a lot.

Funny though, the more peeps in my zone the more data gets used off my account, so I find myself cursing grps that come to xp near me :(
