I would put all the processor info and things, but is it relevant? would you rather i provided it all?

Well.... i tried to use just microsoft ICS on my network... i did it like this...

I cleared everything on both computers in regard to networking, IPs, DNS, everything, so it was on 'obtain IP automatically' and stuff, then connected to the internet on my Server machine (windows 98 SE, 64ram, 433mhz celeron) and run the network setup wizard on my client machine (the one i want to play games on, XP, 128ram, 1.2ghz celeron) and said 'connect through another computer' and got through it, and created a setup disk and restarted

Then i run the wizard on the server, and it restarted and i said 'connect directly to the internet' and now the server can see and access the client, but the client cant access the server and the ICS doesnt work

I opened INET Explorer on the client and it jus says 'Page Cannot Displayed' now ive done all this, im gonna leave it and not fiddle, until i get help, so it cant be anything else wrong, how do i get the ICS to work?

please help

You've 'cleared everything on both computers', but you will need a static IP address on both computers for the networking to work (unless you have one set up as a DHCP server ?).

On both PC's, give a static IP address of 10.0.0.1 and 10.0.0.2, with a subnet of 255.0.0.0 - restart the 98 box, and you should now have a working network - and ICS should kick.

The reason the server can probably see the client is because it is using NETBEUI or IPX, but you'll need TCP/IP correctly configured on both machines for ICS to work.

If the above don't work, give the TCP/IP details for both machines, exactly as they are in the setup screens and we'll go from there.

thanks for helping :)

ok so heres my new configuration (and the ICS works now)

Client:
IP: 192.168.0.2
Subent Mask: 255.255.255.0 (these are the defaults, right?)
Windows XP

Server:
IP: 192.168.0.1
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Windows 98 SE

but the ICS only works with PPPShar Pro (a proxy program i used for ICS last time) and wont work without it. And my whole aim in doing this was to get MOHAA to work over my network. which again doesnt, damn i feel like im never gonna get this sorted :(

IP settings look good - subnet mask is fine.

I know it's simple - but just checking - is the Workgroup name the same for both computers ?

Have you tried manually entering the default gateway on the client machine with the servers IP ?

If this don't work, then the other thing to try is the software I use - WinRoute.

I use this on my five machines, with all machines accessing the net with no noticeable loss of ping. You can get the file from:

http://www.networkingfiles.com/Firewalls/WinRouteLite.htm

(Think its free for a network of three machines).

Instructions on installation, etc:

http://www.plexon.com/faq-winroute_lite.html#TCP/IP

Install on the 98 box, and all you need to do on the client, is enter the default gateway and DNS as the IP address of you server (i.e. 192.168.0.1) - no client software required.

Works really well on my setup.

Slight guess but are you trying to run a dedicated server for MOHAA?

Zonealarm is a firewall - not a Internet sharing program - did you have this installed during your initial setup, as it could be this that is blocking the IP connectoins between client and server ?

With regard to Winroute, install this on the 98 box (the one directly connected to the Internet via modem), and set the default gateway on the client to the internal IP address of the server.

and there I was thinking you couldn't cross platform with ICS

No way! ICS rocks hard!

Get rid of ZoneAlarm for now fella and give it a go. XP doesn't need a static IP address as when ICS is used, it automatically becomes a mini DHCP server and will dish out IP addresses to its clients, in your case the Win 98 machine.

Right, I'll break this down into steps if you haven't got it working, its a little contradictory to what others have said. The problem is you should only install the ICS software on the Server, the other problem comes with static ip addresses, its possible to use them but they are gonna make it alot more difficult, you don't need them as long as the ICS server is switched on, it automatically assigns the ips.

1. Set the SERVER Ip to 192.168.0.1, if you are on cable and have 2 network cards in the machine the card that is connected to the network should be assigned this ip, submask 255.255.255.0 or whatever.

2. You ONLY install the win98 connection sharing software on the server PC, the one connected to the internet, there is a bug in this software, you install the compoment from add/remove programs- windows setup by clicking the "ICS" box. If the ICS is already installed, uninstall it, restart and reinstall, you can only run the setup wizard on installation of the compoment. (at least in my experience.

3. On the client pc DON'T assign it an ip, click the "obtain an ip address automatically" in the tcp/ip protocol bound to your network card, if its not their, install it and restart.

4. set internet explorer to "automatically detect settings"

5. Add protocols like file and print sharing if you want to do that, right click your drives and select "sharing" "share as ...." to do all that.

Apologies if thats a little vague, I've gotta dash, ask away from more help.
