So I got a cheap play and charge cable thingy for a few quid for my wireless xbox 360 controller.
Apparently microsoft, in their infinite wisdom, decided to earlier 360 wireless controllers to restrict the firmware so the PC won't pick it up as a controller.

I've done a bit of googling (leading me to discover the shitty firmware issue) but can't find anyone that has overcome the problem. I was wondering if anyone out there had found a way to get round this problem?

Play and charge cables don't actually transmit any data on wireless x360 pads. They're solely for charging and when you use them the controller still uses the wireless. You'll need a wireless receiver for the PC if you want to use it.

Well that's a bit of a bugger isn't it? I thought I'd found a cheap way to hook up my 360 controller to my pc. Ah well at least I get a rechargable battery pack with it too so it's not money entirely wasted.

In other news I got a dongle to feed optical audio to my amp while playing the 360 on the telly and it doesn't work. Red lights inside the dongle but the amp doesn't pick it up. Works find on my other cable with optical out though. :/ bugger.

When you say works on your other cable, you mean you've got a different optical cable that works with your 360 or the cable works on another device?

I've got one of those Wii/PS3/360 multi console component cables. The optical audio works fine on that even when I have the HDMI plugged in. I got the seperate dongle cos for some reason having the 360 in disables the sound on the Wii.
Meh, I've filled out an RMA for the dongle. Can't see it's worth posting it back to china though since the HDMI lead + dongle was only $8.99.

I have an official 360 version of that dongle, it came with my elite, so they do work, yours must be faulty. Maybe try seeing if you can get a proper one in GAME or somewhere?

You need to buy the wireless receiver for your PC, all the charge kit does is charge
