My step-son has a PS2, I only use it for a DVD player tho, but I have seen some of the games he plays. Recently I was watching him play MGS2, I remember him playing the original on the PSX, and I can't help thinking it's such a bothersome stupid game.
Those damn cut-scenes just go on and on, and they are so pithy, and the way it is so totally linear, rather like the FF series (I remember he played FF7 as well), the gameplay seems too "twitchy" like the old days of the Sinclair Spectrum when you had to be "pixel perfect" to make jumps etc.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking people who play these games, it's not my type of enjoyment however. The linear aspect throws nothing but frustration for me, I might as well play Half-Life or Quake if I wanted "linear" action. After playing PC games like Baldurs Gate, or spending huge amonts of time on MMOGs, the plain linear shoot-em-up just loses appeal and the storyline, especially those awful japanese ones, really grinds my teeth.
So, what is the appeal of games like MGS2 ?
