messing around with CS tweaking and configs - worth it?

ive been playing CS for over a year but its only recently that i have made a proper switch from the quakes to playing CS as my main game and i was wondering is it worth messing around with the configs in CS etc. in order to get a performance boost.

I changed my q2 config a lot back in the day and got some good performance boosts

basically im a lazy git who cant be arsed doing anything if the gains arent that gr8:)

Defo worth it for the gfx improvement.

worth it for the net code tweaks to improve your playing experience.

Since I got my ultra, I turned all the gfx back up to max. I still get 100fps in 1024 :)

i only get around 25 -30 fps and i got a good enuff pc to run hl well :( not sure about the voodoo 3 though. A bit dated innit:)

I think i should be able to get better than 30 though on an isdn line. Looks like im gonna have to get off me ass and do some tweaking::sleeping:

HL engine FPS doesn't depend on connection speed. It's not Quake*

You can hit 99fps with a voodoo3 in HL/mods assuming your CPU is fast. HL has loads of cvars that increase your fps and your ping, aswell as some netcode tweaks that are downright dubious :D

Definately worth tweaking the config.

when I first started the CS thingy a while ago, my ping was crap.

We are talking 600-700 on a good night.

After much tweaking, I can now "play" between 170-200, sometimes dropping to 140

All a matter of trial and error tho, but there are some good guides going about.

Not so sure about the one MT keeps pimping - he probably wrote it.

There was another that Ch3tan pimped - found that it was better :

http://www.3dspotlight.com/guides.shtml

shows you games, software and hardware tweaks.

Just a comment - and I'm sure that I will get flamed for this - but what the hell - gives you guys something to do.

Im sure I read somewhere that the human eye cannot distinguish any difference above 25-30 fps.

ne1?

whilst that is true, u set cs at 99 fps then watch it go down to say,70.whatever ANY one says, u can see the difference.
god try it on q3.set fps at 100,then see it come down to 70 cos of some problem or other, and bloody ell it;'s like u r going backwards!
theres no reason why u should get flamed for such a comment m8,its just the tempreture round here does seem a little high atm :)

I went from 50-60fps to 85-100 and I would never go back.

There is a big difference.

Oh yeah and Laz is right, if you are doing any tweaking use the UC connecting uide and the one he mentioned in his post.

The tweak3d one is out of date and shoddy.

Moreso than being able to 'see' the difference, you can 'feel' it.

Frames per second in TV/Films and FPS in computer games are totally different.. Movies use motion blurring effects and other stuff to make everything look right. Games cant emulate this so the higher your frame rate the better stuff looks. Your monitor is a pivotal part of the set up tho. Regardless of what cl_showfps 1 is telling you - your monitor refresh rate is the limiting factor.

I advise not to change anything..

If it aint broke don't fix it as they say.

I messed around once and usually u make things worse, u got a 50-50 chance, every1's pc is different and they all work a bit differently too.

You're propably thinking of TV broadcasts, which run at 24fps, and they seem smooth enough for me.

NO you havent, the standard hal-life config does not take into account the advanced gfx that todays cards are capable of.

dither and 16bpp as standard? please, adn the 72fps cap?

Now netcode is a different kettle, it takes testing at different settigns to get it right -but the end result is far more satisfying than the shite u start with.

Also twister if everything went wrong for u then u didnt have good guides or do your research.

just do a copy of your config file and keep it somewhere safe, if u kill everything by mistake u can always just go back to default, simple :D

Nothing really wrong with it, i still have it set in LAN mode. I never really thought tweaking would really make any differnce, but after reading this thread maybe there is more to it than i thought.

The maximum fps i get using cl_showfps 1 it about 42 (at spwan normally).... when i play it goes down to 21 and i do get major choke from time to time. Actually EVERY time i get killed i lag or choke..... honest guv. So connection speed doesn't really effect fps? Because i think i had the same rate when i was on my uni LAN.

When i've tried that netgraph_3 thing the lines are all over the place. jumpy jumpy, bumpy bumpy

When i can be arsed i'll look up those guides to see if anything there can improve things.

42 fps ?

Before I got my new card, my fps was usually around 15!!!!

Things were incredibly jumpy.

Well i have a new computer with much better specs but i don't have a copy of half-life. Once i can get my hands on that i'll see how it plays on the new comp. Can 2 computers be networked to connect to the same phone line? Then my brother and i will be able to play at the same time.

Depends what OS you have.

I know that Win2k will allow 2 networked pcs to share 1 modem.

Not sure about WinME or Win9x

If you are actually going to play half life then install the full version. If you are only going to play CS, then get the retail version. This will save ALOT of disk space.

Using win98.... i did have winME on my new comp, but i found nothing worked properly. Put win98 on and everything is fine now. It does however take ages to load up.... and it often says "windows is now updating......" before it loads to the desktop although i haven't added or changed anything. Not sure why that is

Anyway, i am diversing. I will look into it
