Messaging programs

Alwight,

I used to use ICQ, but basically the foghorn at the start really made me start hating it. And then it turned into a personal organiser which was the killing blow.

So lately I've been using Windows Messenger. But as most of my friends leave their comps on 24/7 we like to have conversations that last several days. And WM has this annoying habit of kicking someone from the conversation after an idle period and it just gets annoying having to add them again.

So what do you all use as your messenger program? For me it's probably the single most used piece of software on my PC. It has to be pretty compact, simple and have low resource usage.

Sounds like the best idea. I you and your friends are on-line a lot hop into quakenet (irc.quakenet.org) and join a channel of your choice (if its free).
