Most people think about Mercenaries as a gimped class but infact it's one of the best classes in 1on1 RvR. Of course you won't have a chance to play 1on1 that often but still it tells you something about the class. They have a very high damage output since they get dual wield and they wear chain armor. The chain armor may look like a gimp in PvE but in RvR it's actually a plus since most mids or hibs go for crush or slash against plate tanks and that results in a penalty for slash againts chain and no bonus or penalty for crush against chain so in RvR there armor is better against most weapon choises of the enemy realms.
Also they get a bow to pull mobs with and that makes it easier to solo and don't forget the dirty trick they can use which makes the opponent fumble a lot.

Up to level 35 or so, the Merc is great as he can Dual Wield (although the DW styles don't work very well) and therefore the damage output is pretty high. It is pretty easy to solo yellows and oranges if you get damage bonuses (eg, using slash against trees). The use of the 'throw dirt in face' and bow is also pretty useful.

When you get to 35+, then soloing is very very slow as the Merc WILL take a lot of damage in combat and downtime is pretty high while you heal.

In a group, a Merc is very good at dealing damage and can easily tank. Even with same level Armsmen and Paladins in the group, the Merc will often draw the agro as he is likely the higher damage dealer. However, you do need to support him/her with a Cleric/Friar. The Merc has no spells/chants/songs that he can use to benefit the group, so at later levels you feel a little bit limited in your contribution.

When you get to RvR, then the class is certainly good in 1vs1, but most of the time you meet groups and due to the lack of any long range attacks (bow is too weak) and no stealth or speed-songs, then you'll find you won't survive very long, and maybe not even get close enough to the enemy to attack. A bit limited really. You can't really solo in RvR so rely on grouping.

It is rumoured that at some point the Merc DW styles will be fixed, but that is a long way off. This doesn't affect the Mercs chance of attacking with both weapons, which is dictated by your DW skill level.

Hope that helps

Mercs tend to draw aggro due to the fact taht they're using two (often fast) weapons; the amount of times you hit a mob affects aggro, and is one of the reasons why infiltrators are unpopular in groups :) As you don't normally want a merc to tank (shield spec Palas/Armsmen are the ebst for it, really), you need to avoid aggro; using low bonus styles, de-taunts and limiting buffing works fairly well.

I can solo orange-con berserkers when I have my dirty trick available. I can solo yellow-con without trouble in PvE, and with quite short downtime. Orange con when the bonus is right. My bow is good for pulling. Dual Wield styles work, it's just that they are almost all position based. My armor is still as good as any middie one. I am a close-combat fighter. In RvR I suffer from the same trouble any other close-combat person suffers - mezz. Still I love the mercenary, the styles look awesome. Oh, and I have more hitpoints than my briton arsman buddy on same level. (or at least had when I asked him somewhere in mid-30s), but I am a highlander of course, so have more body. AND: I am one in a million, wheras there are millions of mindless tin-cans around :)

Oh and on tanking: Use efective DW styles all the time, when you got agro you use detaunt - no trouble at all, maximum is 2 hits.
