Memory Testing

Ok, so I am having problems with random BSODs on my new shuttle and I am trying to work out what might be causing them, my first guess is RAM, this is because I had to buy generic stuff from Novatech. The BSOD occur mostly while using IE6 and playing Half-Life (the only game I tried so far) Sometimes it mentions NV4_disp.dll as the culprit but mostly it just shows a HEX location and thats it. IE also crashes normally within XP.

So I want to test my RAM for problems, how can I do this?

Thanks

NV4_disp.dll sounds like it's associated with the nVidia display drivers. Try removing the nForce drivers and installing the default ones shipped on the CD. If that's okay, then try upgrading again from the nVidia site and see what happens.

Hope this helps

P.S. This may be irrelevant, but stick with the nForce display drivers, rather than downloading the dedicated detonator equivalents.

If you still want to test your ram, this is by far the best memory test program I have come across MemTest86 .

Its a stand alone floppy disk that stress tests your memory. Run this and you will find if you have any issues at all. You can turn on extended tests too that takes a few hours to run and does some fairly mad tests on top of the basic ones.

If there is anything wrong with your ram, then this will find it.

Thanks, I left it running for a couple of hours and its found no errors, so I can check that off as a possible problem.

Argh, still having major problems with this shuttle :(

Just keep falling over. Sometimes it just reboots and shows no sign of a problem, other times everything falls over, first IEXPLORE needs to be closed, then media player then you get a BSOD. Other times its part of NVIDIA drivers (NV4_disp.dll, NVMCP.dll etc. etc.). Sometimes its win32k.sys.

I'm still convinced its RAM. The gfx memory is part of normal ram so it can cause problems their. I ran MemTest86 and it did a total pass twice and showed no problems. :/

The machine can run fine for a whole night but as soon as you open something BSOD. Other times you can boot up load something BSOD, reboot, login, BSOD.

I've installed the latest nforce drivers and Gfx drivers. Updated BIOS to latest no difference...

HELP MEH?! :(

Memtest is very reliable IME. Have you tried an OS reinstall? I hate to say that because its always a last resort thing. Are the gart drivers installed? Has this problem started recently or has it always been like this?

I haven't tried an OS reinstall yet...

Gart drivers are installed version: (dunno can't find it in device manager, but it was installed afaik with the nforce2 chipset drivers)

I've had this problem since I built the machine last Friday :)

Hmm, Thats similar to problems Embattle was having, but my problem occurs within Windows XP, I also only updated the bios an hour ago which would fix that problem, Thanks anyway ;)

Faulting application wmplayer.exe, version 9.0.0.2980, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00531ac7.

The application, C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE, generated an application error The error occurred on 03/29/2003 @ 23:39:06.562 The exception generated was c0000005 at address 00000371 (<nosymbols>)

Thats basically the error messages, I think I will try and reinstall Windows tonight just in case. I know that the CD-ROM drive I was using originally had some problems cos it wouldn't read my Mandrake CDs but it seemed ok with XP but maybe it corrupted something.

Thanks

Ok searching on some of those errors

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=m...30430$x9.29723658@twister.socal.rr.com&rnum=1

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=...dll,+version+6.0.2800.1141&btnG=Google+Search

as you can see, they all point to the same solution i.e. that the mshtml.dll version you have is naff and suggest :

Replace all mshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1141 to mshtml.dll 6.0.2800.1126.

The only version I have is 1106 which works for me and you are welcome to it if you want to try it, but apparently there me be some security issues

Tsk, I formatted re-installed did a full format of the HDD, seems ok, install nForce2 drivers from here , Win32k.sys BSOD. IE still crashes with mshtml and I haven't even applied any updates yet (still version 1106) :(

I think I'm gonna return the RAM and get some proper non-generic stuff.

I think I will leave it to do a surface scan of the HDD tonight to make sure that isn't causing a problem...

Thanks :(

Windows XP users must install Service Pack 1 prior to attempting to install this package. Failure to do so will result in the inability to support USB 2.0.
Audio drivers will not install on the following nForce2 products: Chaintech 7NJS. Please use the drivers that come with these products to enable audio functionality.
