Memory problem

Hi I've rcently come into some spare ram, I have 2 memory cards with 512meg of corsair pc3200 ram on each .

I had one already fitted with no previous problems, I fitted the spare and I got a huge drop in 3dmarks and some really nasty distorsion in 3d games/programs etc I also noticed a couple of times my PC loaded up in a very low colour mode and my gfx card wasnt listed in the device mamager, just "vga compatible" was writen where my card name usually is .

I first suspected the gfx card having issues, so I reffited it and done a fresh install of drivers, including my agp controller and direct 3d .

On no improvemnt I started working back on the changes I'd made, I first removed one of the memory cards and found things were back to and everything was running fine, I replaced this with the other memory card and found everything still ran fine .
I fitted them both again and this time my monitor wont even switch on when I start my pc, this happened a couple of times on installing them both last time, I tried moving them to different slots in my pc but this made no change .

Now I know some may think of that old saying that goes something like "if it aint broke dont fix it" but the thing is I cant stand to see £160's worth of ram sitting on the shelf collecting dust, I'd really like to use it but I've run out of idea's as to why it wont work .

My motherboard manual says it will support up to 3gig of ram so I dont think thats a problem .
I did remove the power cable when installing and removing the memory .

The stats for my system are as follows:

motherboard - Asus A7S333 (SiS 745 chipset)
gfx card - Asus V8460 (gf4 ti4600)
psu - 350watt enermax
Memory - 2 x 512meg corsair pc3200
cpu - amd 2200+ thoroughbred core
Monitors a cheap unknown one from pc world

I have means of checking voltages, temperatures, bios revisions etc if it would make any difference .

Any help would be greatfully received, thanks :)

TBH the memory sounds screwed, although I have an A7V8X which officially supports PC3200 memory and on my mobo only one socket supports DDR400.

What OS you running?

I just find it strange that either card will work on its own but they wont work together .

os's Windows 2kpro with service pack3 .

Btw I'm only running the memory at 333mhz, but still do you think its worth trying with both cards in at a slower speed, maybe 266 ?

And I was thinking as a last resort I might get someone I know to flash the bios, thats if its an older revision, I've heard this can be risky though, has anyone any experience in this ?

Not as risky as it used to be since you can use a windows program to update your BIOS.

1. Download the Asus Update program:

http://www.asus.com.tw/support/down...=11&l3_id=0&m_id=1&f_name=asusupdt3.38.01.zip

2. Install it
3. Run the program, Update BIOS from Internet should already be selected.
4. Click Next and choose ftp.asuscom.de from the drop down box.
5. Select the BIOS file in the lower drop down box, the latest version for you mobo should be 1004
6. When you click Next it will DL the BIOS and proceed to the next screen.
7. Check that the model on both the BIOS ROM information and BIOS image information match, if they do then click flash.

The revision on this board is 1004 already :(

Although I do have an asus A7V333 aswell which I will have to flash the bios also to allow it to run with my thoroughbred core cpu .

Maybe the ram will work on that board, think its worth a try ?

Btw thanks alot for the help :)

Lo dude

Can you tell me a little about the board?? Is it as good as they say? Any complaints?

I'm looking at buying this board, where did you buy yours from? I'm looking all over for the best prices.. this is what I got so far...

Mobo price online:

CPU price online (not too sure which CPU I should get just yet):

I've tried the other motherboard and using both memory cards it shows no signs of the problems I ran into with the other board .

But I have another problem if I use the A7V, when it reaches the point where you see the windows 2k logo and the little blue bar at the bottom loading up it goes to a blue screen saying that my boot device is unaccesable .
I cant understand that, as its now working fine in the A7S and another thing is windows gets half way through loading before I get the error screan .

Any suggestions on what I could try, I've run windows repair stuff from my cd but no luck .

I have installed an agp driver for the previous card (A7S), is it likely that could cause problems like what I'm experiencing when I use the A7V ?

Did you reinstall when you switched from A7S to A7V?

No I didnt, I didnt think it would make any difference, I reinstalled now but I still have problems once its loaded .
Works in safe mode so maybe I have a driver problem or a confliction .

I'l get there eventually :)

Thanks alot for the help :)

Try a bit by bit install of drivers, and see which one makes it fall over.

I rebuilt it from scratch and its up and running fine now, but with an extra 1000 3d marks, not bad eh :D

Every setting is the same and clock speeds are all default, I used to get 10500 on the A7S and now its 11500

Anyway thanks again for help
