I know I'm getting off-topic here, but the crux of the matter for me is that I have a family. I live near where the "Tony Martin" incident occured, I have no illusions of what would happen to me if I did use a weapon to defend my family.

I wish people would stop mentioning Tony Martin. He went to jail fair and square, it wasn't for defending his hiome, it was for killing someone who posed no threat to him with an illegally owned firearm (he found it in the back of his car my arse) he shot someone who was trying to get the fuck away from him out of malice and he had previous for attempting to shoot gypsies anyway (hence losing his lecense to own a gun in the first place)
+ the fact that he deliberately had a gun who's sole purpose is to kill in a nasty way....

Even if it had been in Texas he would have been done for murder...

The reason I mentioned it in my post is because when it happened it seemed to impress apon me the implications of using a weapon in defence - not to re-open the whole debate again.

She was outside of her house, so the 'defence' err...defence, wouldn't stand. This is what's so screwy, as a copper she would have known that; which is why I think there's a lot more going on than meets the eye.

I completely agree with what you're saying here.

However, if you look carefully you will see that I only mentioned the "tony martin thing" because when it happened I became alot more aware of what happens when weapons are used in defence - before that point I was more or less ignorant as to the legal side of things like this.

I wasnt mentioning it because it had any similarity to the case in hand, only because of its affect on how I looked at things.

NOTE: I AM NOT SAYING TONY MARTIN WAS RIGHT OR WRONG HERE

Hard to say without knowing exactly what happened, but I think that she should never had left her house really, had she of simply carried the knife around with her while she was in the house she would've been alot better off, but as others have said, taking the weapon into a situation that she knew was very probably going to get dodgy was possibly not the best idea.

I mean, willingly going into a situation like that at all isnt the best idea, let alone with a big weapon like that :)

This is where there is a massive grey area. How do you explain that the corpse next to you was threatening your life or your 40" plasma telly?

If someone tried to take my telly I would fuck them up so bad.

I shudder at just the thought of it.

I would throw Samm at them.

Christ.

We're not going to have a big flaming row about tony martin now are we? seriously? :D

Some people agree with what he did, others do not. Its about as arguable as weather god exists because frankly, there is very good evidence to suggest that tony martin is either guilty ot not guilty and arguing about it here really wont solve much.

Where I come from pikeys are a very big problem, and so the way tony martin was charged for what he did was looked at as a disgrace, however, I am not totally fanatical about it and I can see that others may well hold the opinion that what he was wrong.

Since everyone one here knows pretty much exactly what everyone else is going to say about this subject, is there even any point in saying it all? :)

Well its nice to get confirmation :)

On the whole I would say always take your mobile up to bed (good advice in the event of fire too) - if you hear a burglar downstairs ring the police - if you can get out of the property without having to confront them then do so.

If you cant get out turn on the lights and make some noise - 99% of burglars are not murderers and will bugger off if they realise your aware of them - saying you've phoned the police would probably work pretty well too.

Dont block their route of escape and dont confront them unless they come at you in which case try to immobilise them (knee in the groin's always good) and then leggit out yourself and raise the alarm with neighbours (assuming you aren't living at bleak house...).

Dont worry about trying to be heroic or about catching the burglar - they wont get much of a sentence even if they are found guilty so its not worth risking yourself.
