is it...
fps_max (number)
fps_modem (number)
fps_lan (number)

i cant remember, i thought CS automatically sets FPS_MAX to 70 anyhow?

My quake history tells me its better to have a smooth fps rather than a high fps going low in firefights.I know thats not as important in cs, but it is still relevant. For that reason my cs, which is set at 1024-768, I leave set to 72 or 60 depending on the refrsh rate ive set for the card. Currently its on 60.
That way the game is very smooth, no jumps in frame rate at any time , no matter what is going on, 16 man firefight or whatever.
It works on my pc @ 72 fps as well, but I find the picture better at 60 for some reason. It will do it at 99 too. but sometimes I do notice a slowdown at the bigger resolution, and so i stick to the lower rate.
Oh well just my bit .. :)

yeah, my Monitor is set at 60 also on refresh rate i believe, but, i get 60FPS from my new card... which is annoying because my old cheaper unknown card was 60FPS also, so i was wonderin if this FPS_Max 99 would kinda sort it out and give it a higher FPS?

I personally have mine set to 85, now thats because my monitor refreshes at that rate and disabling vsync gives problems. It's also because even on a gf2 gts I find that in open area and fire fates fps jumped around when i had fps set to 99. Stable is better than jumpy, throd is right.

does it actually make a noticable difference or does it just trick CS into making the net_graph show it as 99...

Supergray Reason for 60fps limit

supergray....

The reason you are probably only getting 60fps despite the fact that you have det fps_max to 99 is that you have vsync (on your VC) turned on. This limits the fps to the refresh rate of your monitor to reduce tearing seen at the corners of the screen.

If you are really bothered about it. goto display properties/ settings and underneath the screen res. click advanced..

depending on your adapter and software there'll be an option to turn vsync off somewhere.

Hope that helps

It sets a maximum limit for your fps, the default is 72, most can manage 99 on modern pc's. Of course it is limited by vsync (if you have it on), that said most modern monitors should be able to refresh at at least 85hz at high res. Setting a max value for your fps can help you steady your fps so it doesnt jump drasticlly.

I do the cl_showfps 1 thing in the corner and I never go above 60fps for some reason.

either vsync is enabled or the combination of GFX card & cpu is a bit duff
most likely vsync
