Fraid I was only a normal(ish) student - so I cant help either.

There were however a few mature students on my course (some with children).

I'm not a mature student, but we had some of them at the college I went to. We made them embarrassed to be there. It mighta been a different story if they actually knew anything, but they quit anyway. I don't actually have any point to this little story, sorry

The former were away from home, the latter close by.

I'm not entirely sure of the reasoning behind the mature students I came into contact with - I assume a couple were for the reasons you suggested, but, there was one women who was around 60, so I have no idea why she decided to do a Law degree. Each to their own I guess.
