Does anyone here have any knowledge on these? I've had a little look at the Butchers down the road and he's offered to take me on as one, thing is I'm over 19 so I'd be whats classed as a Mature Apprentice. Looking on the National Minimum Wage page they don't get it for the first 12 months at least(I was told on the phone(Apprenticeship Helpline) that it's £80/week). So I'm wondering if the government help out at all here with benefits or anything like that, I can't get income support or anything as I'm still living at home. I've phoned Careers Advice, Apprenticeship Helpline but neither of them seemed to know and my neighbour works for the JSA who told me they can't really help either.

Any useful input would be great as I'm at a loss :p

Stop your moaning it clearly states that you will not get mini wage untill you have done 12 months!

I wish I was getting paid to go to education. :p

Also getting chummy with the Butcher and you might end up with free cuts of meat :D

Nate? Mature? This government is off their rocker! :D

Anyway, in finland(doesn't help i know) the government pays for your apprenticeship if it's made into a "deal" of sorts.

You get crappy "enough for rice" pay, but you get SOME pay and some living expense support until you get the job full time.

I'm betting that the UK gov. would have some similar thing(that 80/week sounds like it) to make more people work isntead of collect support.

HAve you checked this?

Aye I've read somewhere that some organisation will pay for the apprenticeship, but thats more of a thing for the employer to pay for anyway.

I'd suggest talking to an employment office or some such, or perhaps even the employer.

Best thing to do is go out to the government buildings(pain i know) and ask.

They're used to dealing with, don't take it personally as it doesn't mean you but others, dumbasses :D

I thought the point of apprenticeships were that you learn a trade unpaid? Obviously if you're still living at home it's the perfect chance to do it since you don't have the responsibility that you would otherwise. I wouldn't expect you could get anything from the government in this situation, unless your family income is on the low side (probably under £30kpa going on the other government financial schemes such as college 'pay').

Great someone that knows his stuff about it :D Cheers YoDa. Did you have to go on the dole before you got accepted in to your apprenticeship? Boss remembers seeing a program where someone was doing a building one but had to be on it for 6 months before being taken in to the apprenticeship. Do you know how your boss got the government grant?

It seems more like you don't get paid a lot, you get paid for what your worth pretty much. As your quite unskilled when you start the trade it gradually goes up as you learn.

Thats not so good :( I think I can trust these people though, they are a very friendly family run business, mum knows them quite well as a customer and they've been in the village for a year or so now.

Well when i was 16 i went into my apprenticeship and went collage one day a week and 4 days at work. I started off on £80 a week for about 3 months then i got most of the basics so i got a wage rise. I ask my collage teacher about how much he was paying me but he said that £80 was the least he could pay me. Im not sure about the grant he sorted all of that, im sure if you look online you will find something about it.

I did an apprenticeship about 10 years ago, was on £50 a week for a short time. Was paid weekly (as apposed to monthly) and according to the company who found me a job and sorted my college stuff out, I could claim back a certain amount of expenses... travelling and eating/living away from home when required. I forget when the wages went up but it was the company I was working for (Housing company) that sorted most of it out. I was 16.5 though so not sure if the wages went up once I hit 17.

I'm trying to remember, but doesn't the Apprenticeship Centre hand out information packs with all the info you might need? If not I'm almost certain you can get some good information from the Government website, my brother checked there recently for his engineering work.

On a side note, mine wasn't slave labour but when I went to college there was a lot of horror storys floating about the room and well over half the group quit within 6 months, we went for 50 to 12. If you do pick something be 100% sure your happy with it, any gut feeling and look somewhere else.

Since when? When I did my apprenticeship (admittedly back in the late Ice Age), I was paid (and taxed) like anyone else. Are you sure you're not confusing work experience with an apprenticeship?

When I looked at apprenticeships a few years back there wasn't a single one I found that paid anything at all. Maybe that's changed since the numbers were struggling back then.
