Martin Carthy

English folk singer/songwriter? Probably not many people here's cup of tea but I like him, anyone heard of him?

heard of and heard some. Starts getting REALLY dull, for me, after Nick Drake/John Martyn

Well, he was around before both and Drake was influenced heavily by him. Some of his stuff is a little tedious but some tracks are great, he's a pretty good guitarist.

i didnt mean PHYSICALLY after, i mean after the popular artists such as Drake/Martyn.

when it starts getting quite obscure (like Louden Wainwright III)
it also gets really DULL, there is a tendancy for self indulgent, smug and pompous music too.

Folk Artists i ADORE:
Nick Drake
Donovan
Bob Dylan
Bill Callahan, perhaps he is folk, i dunno.
Tracy Chapman, bets pop folk crossover since Donovan
Paul Simon/Art Garfunkel
Arlo Guthrie


lots of others i like/and are ok, but so many that its hard to sort the dross from the good stuff. Also i like quite tuneful folk, good and complex guitar playing is nice, but doesnt hold my interest for long in the folk context.

Ah I see what you mean, and you're right. Carthy's solo stuff is patchy but there's some great songs in there, but compared to Drake he's not as good.

I only asked because I know the guy, was curious if anyone here liked him.

btw, Carthy's version of Scarborough Fair is better than Art and Garfunkel's
