This has renewed my interest in the whole Martian canals/planet-wide irrigation/cycle of life/position from the sun thing.

*search Google*

The human race is going to be like a virus - infesting a host, raping all its resources and then moving onto another.

tbh i doubt the human race will survive long enough to get out of our solar system, so the rest of the universe is saved :)

not a particuarly nice thought i know, but its just human nature :(

Insiders suggest that, partly as a result of this finding, Nasa may now commit itself to a manned landing within 20 years.

I can see it now, they land, they get out and drill a big hole, they see all that water and go "ooh, let's get some for analysis" they bend down to collect and wham! a big fish monster comes up and eats them....

*giggles*

:D

'course it's all a conspiracy mind, and it'll be covered up quick sharp.

Fookin' 'ell. They go to the moon and bring back rock. They'll go to Mars and bring back water.

I ask you...

we use stuff? so what thats why its there for in the first place.
If there was no intelligent organisms who would apreciate earth then? We (as in humans) can use earth so long we dont misuse caus that would hurt us more then earth.

We do use stuff, for example animals, we eat animals because they are made out of meat. We use wood to build houses.

Oh and if they want gas, why go to Venus when you could extract it from peoples arse's. ;)

yes, resources are there to be used....but in moderation

humans are a 'virus' cos we use as much as we want when we want.

whereas other organisms learn to use only what they need

rofl sorry Daf thats nonsense. first why in moderation? if by using resources so that we can gain more resources?
which other organisms learn to use only what they need? rabbits in Australia perhaps?

the rabbit explosion was caused by human intervention, therefore thats not really the point. most other ecosystems without human intervention and allowed to develop naturally, form a balance with all the organisims within it

and using resources in moderation...well look at the current estimates for fossil fuel resources, both coal and oil are projected to have run out with a century (i think)
yes, new supplies of these fuels are always being created, but not in the proportions they are being used, therefore moderation is required, which we dont do

They already do - they're called biomass generators. Basically you get a pile of cow shit, collect the methane from it, and burn it. Who says geography GCSE is useless?

piss loadsa water on mars? i read in one of those science mags i think it was new scientist that they are estimating a world water shortage in the next 150 years or so. wonder if Iraq 150 yrs on lead by a cloned sadam would be given any.

ohhh am going serious now. Daf nice post and to be honest agree with a lot. But the estimates are usually not looking at the advances being made in science. Fossil fuel so what if that is finished there are other solutions, the only reason why we are using it is becaus its rather low tech and the other means are just a bit too expensive.
The rabbits were introduced by humans, but you stated that organism learn to use only what they need, when will they?

I could go on but it's mainly how you look at live then about arguments. You are either a pessimist (bad future) or a realist (good future :p)

I don't get this. There's a fixed amount of water in the world as it is. It never stops being water, as such, it just changes state. There can be localised water shortages but on a global level the amount of water never, ever changes.

Is that being pedantic? :/

I'd like to know how they're predicting a water shortage & that the water levels are gonna rise.....

Maybe water molecules are getting physically larger but the number of them will decrease.
