Mark Thomas' Secret Map Of Britain

Anyone else see this last night? I'm a big fan of Mark Thomas, and the work and research he does; not one of his programmes never fails to fascinate and entertain me.

For those that didn't see it, he was basically going round the country, looking into "secret" places in the country: such as places that exist physically, but do not appear on any OS maps, and what is contained within them.

Some worrying findings included:

  • A site that were scheduled for nuclear bombing, and given the name "Palestine".
  • Incredibly high amounts of plutonium in a residential area, with no explanation from the government as to where it came from.
  • Huge fields growing Cannabis for "medical research".

And so on. He spoke with ex MI5 agents about how illegal the majority of their activities are, and how a MP had won a legal battle to see the files kept on him by MI5, and yet had never seen or heard anything from them about his file, which contains nothing of any worth keeping secret.

Anyone else a fan of the work Mark Thomas does? He seems to be one of the very few genuine investigative reporters out there, and manages to research so intensly he finds out some very scary stuff. Weeeeeeeeee!

I love watching him do his thing, but ain't seen much of his stuff in recent years, as it's not very well advertised beforehand...

:/

Same here. He's a crusader in dark dark times. It's a great shame I don't get a chance to watch his programmes more often :/

I love the way he's billed as a comedian though, when the subjects he tackles are all very serious.

That's always bemused me. He is actually a very funny bloke, but his programmes are certainly not a "Comedy Product" like the title suggests, there are some amusing moments where he'll point out something utterly ridiculous and fucked up about what he is researching, but that's more laughter from disbelief.

One of my favourite issues he tackled was "organic" food. He basically found out, through a lot persistence and putting up with a great deal of shit from supermarkets and distributers, that the majority of organic food is not organic, and is actually in fact coated with chemicals and imported from other countries.

Is this gonna be a series or was it just a one off?

Thinking about it, if they sold tapes of his shows I'd consider buying them. Although it's not a comedy program per se, as Wazz said, they are funny from a gobsmacking disblief way.

His humour is very clever - not many people can make jokes about the subjects of his shows

I love his shows although I never seem to catch them(just hear about them from other people)what a wonderful pain in the arse MT is(not moving target)perhaps he is to close to the bone to be heavily advertised:(

Well, I'll be seeing him do a live show at Glastonbury again this year, always worth checking out.

Mark Thomas is a sh*t, I've seen him live and he is incredibly vitrolic in his so-called "humour", he appeals to a certain audience and milks their hatred of certain subjects, not so different to what the "dice man" did in the states.

At first I found his documentries informative, but they become tiresome, then you realise that his subjects aren't actually that "shocking" at all. Important infomation is often left out of his programs to make them sound scary or conspiratory, its difficult to put your finger on them but is like the way animal rights groups show pictures 20 years ago and imply they are happening now.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

he doesn't say "go and kick them in" he tries to get people to protest in a funny way. Take the program about the Data protection act, he got people to send in tapes of them on CCTV doing stupid stuff. I thought it was great. I've watched his program for ages now and even though I don't agree with everything he says I like the way he protests and brings things to light. He's best when he's pissing off MP's hehehe that cracks me up all the time.

He's an entertainer not the ministry for information, if he leaves things out it's not exactly "against the public's interest", also if he does he's only doing what every other media does.

Where ??

Norfolk. It's a special strain that contains very low traces of the active ingredient (THC or something). In effect you'd have to smoke a tonne of it to get any noticable buzz

Mark Thomas is fab. Well researched and acidicly written shows although the real reason you laugh is because the mind boggles at the info he uncovers.
