I feel like bashing today.

If you aren't up to date on the latest news:

COO Paul Sams (blizzard) announces:
gamesindustry said:
While a number of World of Warcraft users dropped the widely popular MMO to play EA's recently released Warhammer Online, more than half of those gamers have already returned to Blizzard's market-leader.
Link: Blizzard: Warhammer players already returning to Warcraft // News

Now Mark Jacobs gets all defensive and posts:
Mark Jacobs said:
So, let me get this straight. I've got the COO of the major competitor saying things that make it *look* like 1/2 of our players have left (which is ridiculously untrue)
Link: f13.net forums - State of The Game - Mark Jacobs

----------------
My thoughts:
No Mark. COO Paul Sams stated that half of the players, who left for warhammer, has returned.

He DIDN'T state (this is what Mark Jacobs seems to think) that 100% of the 750,000 war-subscribers = x-wowplayers.... And more than 50% of THOSE players have left, to go back to wow.
For all we know: Perhaps 5,000 players came from wow, and 2,500 went back?
I'm not saying 5,000 is the exact amount, but it's ofcourse a lower number than 750,000.

God some people need to redo school. Americans, eh?

I can recommend reading Marks forum post. Very defensive - and a good read. We could use IainC posting something about "borderline... something something".

And the last note: I wouldn't shake Mark Jacobs hand, even if it had a million dollars in it. I always hated WoW for ruining the 2nd generation of MMOs (read: Crappy pvp-system, soloing from lvl 1 to level-cap, without interaction with other players, etc.) - but i have ALWAYS given Blizzard credit for being innovative and being "ahead". What i dislike is some "follow up" company trying to copy everything from its successfull competitor (blizzard): User interface, gfx (yes i know all about the warhammer-license - no need to remind me), pvp-system, you NAME it.

Years ago i heard rumors that the DAoC-engine (read: gfx-engine, gfx and database) were bought from 3rd party, by Mythic Entertainment. When i see such copying from competitors, along with the SAME bugs pops up in Warhammer as DAoC (pbaoe through doors comes to mind), i begin to believe such rumors.

Most likely I'm getting banned from FH now, for posting such blasphemy - but HELL it was worth it.

What do we learn from all this? If you copy+paste a competitor's game, be ready for some bashing - and for god sake turn the other cheek. Don't freak out, and hit back, when you are wrong in your analysis. Listen to your PR-managers and don't reply.

I wont be replying to this thread - but i'll read the comments. Read the stories and develop your own opinions. All my sources are linked to.

Cowled Scout.
Old DAoC player and X-warhammer player - not a wow-player.

Does it really matter.

Honestly Im bored of this whole subject now. This whole wow or war thing was tedious from the start.

If you like WoW fine, go play it. If you like WAR, fine go play it.

Can we please stop reams and reams of comparison and analysis. Its like comparing kangaroos with goldfish.

What? Blizzard being innovative and ahead?
Am I in the twilight zone or something? Because this must be an alternative reality...

What was the point of the Op's post?

Its like some school kid arguement.

750,000 players must have come from somewhere, and I would put my own money on the majority comeing from WOW.

I know there are a lot of DAOC players here, but last time i looked, DAOC was a ghost town BEFORE Warhammer kicked off.

So unless they were playing AoC (ROFL!!!) they came in mass numbers from WoW.

(yes there are other games, but none have the numbers to cover this)

All the guy at Blizzard is doing is confirming that they lost almsot 10% of their playerbase in one hit.

Which says a lot about the state of their game and their players perception of it atm (not many industrys can afford that kind of hit)

errr, no. 10% of 11 million is not 750k (which i believe to be the sales figures for WAR? not 100% sure) only a small fraction of these being x-wow players. lets call it 33% as there is no real way of knowing. that would be 250k (750k / 3 = 250k) ex wow players switched to WAR, of which half have returned (250k / 2 = 125k)

100 / 11,000,000 * 125,000 = 1.136% of the (ex)WoW player base are still playing WAR rather than WoW (jack shit in real terms) Then you have to count the other players who return on the release of WOTLK. I really don't think blizzard have much to fear at the moment

Not that it really matters anyway :p

Some of you people are so fucking naive its unreal.

So what if 500k wow players come over to WArhammer? does that actually mean they have cancelled thier WoW accounts?????

I for one have both a wow account and a war account subbed so blizzard have not lost me as a number...

...and I bet there are many more that are the same.

so just stuck the hell up and play the game....yeah thats right, its a GAME.

It happens with all games.

EvE lost players to WoW then some went back. WoW lost players to AoC then some went back. Aoc lost players to everyone, some may go back. WAR gained players from WoW, some have gone back.

The only clear thing that has come from all the articles and all perfumed male bull droppings is this:

Mark jacobs comes across as a serial tosser.

I'm a bit hungover but the way those two quotes reads Mark Jacobs is saying that Blizzards quote made it look like WoW had stolen all their players back, not that they actually had, so I dont think he needs to redo school? Might have interpreted it wrong though.

I too still have a WAR account and plan on dipping in now and again. I have a right to complain if i think its shit though, in the hope that they will address the issues that concern me, I am not ready to write it off yet as it does have potential as a PvP game, I just wish it wasn't such a pointless slog to get there.

well I tried to pick up a kangaroo to slap my mate across the face but it was too heavy so no....Kanga's are not better than goldfish

Teach a man to fish and he can fish slap his mate for life. Teach a Kangaroo to bitch slap your mate, well then crack out the beer and enjoy the spectical, it'll never get old.
