I have the boxed version of cs and it didn't include several of the maps. I have downloaded a couple of them but when i try and play on them i get the error "could not open /valve/jos.wad"

Where do i get this wad at or how do i get these maps to work?

hmmm. there's 2 ways of fixing this...

  • Option 1: this is the easiest peace of mind option, but requires a medium sized download. get the 7110 patch (patches from 7.1b to 1.0). this should replace the missing files (with one or two exceptions). This is available at: http://www.counter-strike.net/downloads.html and is 23.4 megs.
  • Option 2: This is much more akward, but will mean smaller downloads. Find out which maps are incorrect/have files missing and downlaod those particular maps. You can find all the maps here: ftp://ftp.barrysworld.com/halflife/mods/counterstrike/.

Hope this helps

Halflife (and therefore cs) have map folders (which u no doubt figured out and unzipped the maps u downloaded into there). However, some maps have their own textures and the bsp file (map file) will come with a wad file - make sure the wad file goes into the cstrike folder, NOT the map folder.

NB - the problem with cs is that they change half the maps on each update. Check you have the right map version - if it isnt the right one it wont work. The best way 2 get around this is 2 download from the server (ie join a game with the map u want - try 2 join when the map has just started as it will take a while to download as it is not compressed).

thank you

Thank you both for the help, I managed to solve the problem by downloading a group of older maps that i found, they had that one wad file that i was missing.

Thanks again
