Hey,
I just got a new 600Kbps connection with NTL. I could'nt wait to get online playing Quake III Arena... but only to connect to a server thats only 6 miles away from me and I still have a PING rate of about 400-500!!!.... WHY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!???????????

My friend who has the same connection doesnt have any problems, he gets PING rates of about 10-30.

Please Help... :(

Having Cable Modem does not magically garuntee a fantastic ping.

There is this mystical black art called Routing.

NTL dont seem to have mastered it :)

Best thing to do is move house a bit nearer the server.

Maybe -

  • Try a different server?
  • Run your own server?

Depends where to. NTL's routing is notorious for being problematic. Some places NTL pings OK to. Others you have to measure the ping with a calendar.

If you do some 'trace routes' to various machines around the world it'll show up where you're losing the most latency - all depends on the routing. I still get better pings to Dutch and Itallian servers than i do most UK ones !

Aside (while we're on NTL)
My NTL cable connection went really bad a couple of weeks ago. Turned out some kids had kicked open the box at the end of the street, and messed about with the spagetti inside (amazing it worked at all if you ask me - BNC connectors in the gutter etc). Had to tell NTL where the box was too - they didn't seem to know, - sigh
