Mad Onions and Benchmarking re DaoC

Just a polite enquiry to anyone with a bit of time to kill.

Most of us have problems to some degree with lock-up etc in a large scale melee situation. Using the MadOnion 2001SE Benchmark (available for download here) I'm getting scores of +/- 5000 using an Ati 7200/1.4ghz CPU/ (still locking up now and then with /effects off etc) and was wondering if anyone else playing DaoC could give me their benchmark and how the game performs for them. I have access to a Ati9700/3ghzCPU (late evenings - so not always convenient) and it breezes the game apart from infrequent minor glitches, and scores around 16000 on the Onion program (20k estimated when the CPU is refrigerated in a month or so), but was hoping to establish whether my own kit is performing as well as it should with respect to DaoC.

Any comparisons would be apprecated.

Regards

Current engine draws everything in an x degree point of view angle even if 90% of that isn't visible due to hill/keepwall/bodys of other chars.

Drawing 100chars times xx polygons = supercomputer to run fluent.

First reactions about the new engine from the betatest show that zerg RvR keeps running fluent with /effects all on using about the same computer as you describe.

In short. The low fps is NOT hardware related but ENGINE related. Engine luckily gets fixed. The new engine is planned to be released with the expension and as a download/update for people that wont buy the expension.

AMD XP 1700+
Geforce 4, ti4400
512mb ddr ram

Game runs spot on unless in large scale hunts, etc. No actual long pauses with spell effects set to full in any situation (unless I been playing for 5 hours or so and then the game runs slooooow in general :)

Haven't used the Madonion thing yet tho I will tonight ;)

Interesting stuff, I am lead to believe the new engine only makes use of the GeForce 3 or above gfx cards

Though I could be wrong

they've amended that to all geforces 2 through 4...

if your card doesn't support the funky features you'll just get a less nice looking game I guess ;)

i got ATI 9000 pro 128 and 500mhz amd and the game runs like a clock nowdays=) had big problem when i had winME but under xp it works fine. It may be that it now uses all my 400mb ram properly.

AMD 1200 athlon
512MB PC133
GEforce 4Ti4200 (128mb)

And I have to agree with Biffsmash..

The game runs perfectly smoothly until I hit large scale RvR.. and even then its still well playable. It certainly wasnt when I had my GEforce2mx card, but it seems fine now.

It has the feel of an engine problem though, its clearly toiling trying to jump through polygonal hoops (so to speak)

it's amusing sitting in DF thinking 'hrm I lag when I look east - sounds like a horde coming' :)

3Ghz-CPU?? :) Wow...you must be damn lucky, Killgorde

Anyways...for comparison, here are my specs and points:

CPU: AMD 2100XP+ (not overclocked.........yet)
RAM: 512 MB DDR-333 Corsair
GFX: Elsa Gladiac 920 (Geforce 3)

So far this system scored about 9000 points under MadOnions 2001. And honestly..things run pretty decent even in RvR. Well..okay...if our pk is filled with about 200 Hibs who are about to storm your relickeep..then it's get a bit down framewise, but in "normal" RvR things still run pretty smooth.

New engine I dont think will work on GeForce 2 / 3 MX versions, well not to give the flash FP rate promised anyway.

Unfortunately, guess what pile o junk i got :(

They do say it will run on all Geforce versions 2 through 4 including MX versions.

Hopefully the engine will have nice little options to turn off and configure various settings to tailor the game to your system :)

(if not i'll not be able to play from work :p

when i get a new motherboard i will get 13-14k easy. normal sd ram and p4s dont mix lol

This was on a geforce 2 card :)

Its engine related indeed. Apparently though the shrouded isles engine seems to be way faster with less lock-ups or framelag.

Haha should run on a MX... What's Mythic thinking?

If someone says they have no graphics lag when there's a zerg of 50+ people, they're lying. Nothing renders that many polygons fast enough.

Well Belth...it's some time ago since I took a screeny during a zerg, but I promise the next time I get into a 50+ one I will make a screeny and post the link for you :)

Erm, ofcourse it's possible to take screenies while getting graphics lag... Show me a computer that plays smoothly (30+ fps) with this engine and 50+ characters on the screen.

Well...I thought the so-called "lag bar" (you know "Shift + P") would prove that it the game runs smoothly ;)

When you see characters moving not-so-smoothly-as-they-could and spell effects displaying only few frames out of tens of frames, you're getting graphics lag. The Shift-P meter doesn't update fully realtime either, it's lagging in itself a bit too, check next time you're going LD - it'll stay in red for a while after the network cognestion has passed.

I was referring to a previous post which was referring to a statement of a betatester of the NEW engine. Sorry it got a bit too complicated for you

My reply wasn't directed at yours, Mister Every-reply-is-reply-to-my-post.

I think we kinda misunderstood each other there, Belth.

Please let me try and explain my point again :) You know that the lag-bar (or as some like to call it: fun-o-meter) consists of three different "lights", namely "packet loss", "latency" and "framerate".
So I thought a screenshot in the middle of a zerg with the last "light" green would prove that there are computers who can handle normal RvR.

You know character and animations in RvR normally still-run-as-smooth-as-they-were-intended, even in a "normal" zerk. But hey..maybe Hibzergs are smaller than Albzergs ;)

3dmark is not really a fair comparison to Daoc, Do u play 3dmark for 10 hour stints? heheh no.

daoc leaks memory like god knows what hence the massive slow down u get after playing for a long time. You will also find that after being in a mad rvr battle that even when its still over your machine will be loaded. Mids look at the lair, relogs every DT for that reason.

Ran a historical memory usage whilst playing and as soon as i loaded daoc i had all but 20m of 512 used, after 4 hrs play i had no physical memory left and 493meg of page file being used by the game. 1gig of memory (be it virtual or not) being used by 1 app? lol... shite, diff story for vid editing etc but a game! very poor code. As said above daoc draws EVERYTHING whether u can see it or not. Machine spec seems pretty irrelevant after a point, sure a quicker machine makes it look nicer and run better to start with but give it some hours and it will slow down.

I run p4 2.4, 512 ddr 3200, rad8500 and 15k scsi drives (so i got damn fast page file there) and still it starts crappin out after a while....

bring on the new engine!!

3dmark2000 is a Dx7 Benchmark, has no relevnace to daoc which uses dx8.1
