Have you set the correct netspeed in the preferences?

Thanx, but I`ve already tried using values between 2000 and 5000 with no improvement. I`ve reinstalled UT and no change in ping :( . Using Stat Net I had 0% pl in and out, 20 packets/sec in and 18 out with a netspeed of 3800 and the ping was 11549 on a Barrysworld (340ish ping) server.

Looked at PlanetUnreal and Unrealtournament.com but no help there!

Cheers, DazzL

I wish I had DSL in my area. BT at the forefront of cutting edge technology? Bollocks I say, their too busy lining their own pockets and providing a substandard service for everyone. Merry %#@$ing Christmas BT.

Cheers for the URL m8, I`m off to check that out as soon as I`ve finished here. Why can`t modems sort themselves out FFS :)

Cheers ppl

Junk you modem! It's a soft modem* (you can recognise them by names such as Winmodem, Windows Modem, HSP, HCF or HSP - most PCI modems are soft modems too)! They're no use for gaming because they don't have their own dedicated chip on the card. They use some of the CPU's resources instead which uses up resources you use when playing. In other words, your computer has to do more work to make up for the modem's lack of hardware, which kills your ping.

You need a hardware modem. It doesn't particularly matter whether it's internal or external (internal are fractionally better because of the more direct connection to your PC bus) as long as it has all of it's own chips and doesn't rely on "stealing" resources from your CPU.

Once you've replaced it, try tweaking your modem and dialup setups. Have a look at these sites for some advice:

http://www.kirupa.com/tips/modem.asp
http://www.vgpalace.com/hardware/guides/tweak-7.html
http://www.teleport.com/~curt/modems.html
http://www.downloadit.gr/~v_laessig/ping.html

Finally, try tweaking your UT setup by lowering the resolution and turning off some things like coronas and dynamic lighting.

I was able to get around 150-180 ping on modem in UT no problem. There are peeps who get less.

It's all academic to me these days, as I'm on Cable :D

*P.S. I've looked up your modem, it's definately a software modem:

Conexant 56K v.90 PCI Software Data/Fax/Voice Modem
56K PCI Bus Voice/Data/Fax Software Modem.

Thanks for the info, I`ve suspected that the modem may be part of the prob. So I`m on lookout for a hardware modem. Cheers :)

(just got me line fixed, haven`t been online for 2 days D`OH) :(

Yeah NEED hardware modem. Also.. at once stage I found that Firewalls fek up your ping :)

So if you have one try turning that off.

I use ZoneAlarm firewall. I haven't noticed any effect on my ping.
