I can't get into Gemmel's books. Waylander is 'ok' but nothing special... same with the Rigante books. 'Hero with a bad attitude and short temper' is already a bad start, but every book of his that I've read has one. Admitedly I haven't read many, but it's one author I'll skip for now.

The Sword of Truth books by Terry Goodkind had potential, there're some nice ideas and it's easy going... but he lost the plot. The books hover between a younger audience and adult content. Each book(that I read) focuses on a new danger to the world and the story leads up to the final moment... when the main character finds a bland solution and saves the day, in the most boring way possible.

Magician(Raymond Feist) is a nice read, but it's something I'd buy for younger readers. The second book introduces a street urchin to the cast and I was glad to finish it. Might look into the Riftwar saga at some point...

The sci-fi books from Banks are pretty good. Use of Weapons gets my vote for being one of his best. I don't like the way some of the books build up the story, with the potential of something major happening... only to see the bubble burst and have an all round happy ending.

I'm going to start on some Stephen Donaldson, when I get the time later this year...
