Long boot times...

Why? Nothing has changed, i've scanned for spyware with the latest version of ad-aware and spybot S&D, its happend since i installed a network card  the only thing thats really changed is the amount of free space on D:\ (which has gone down to 9gb, was about 30gb before i got the ram). But the space on D:\ shouldnt affect it as windows is installed on C:\

The exact problem is that, it loads to the login screen incredibly quickly, but once i login it takes forever for the hard drive light to stop whizzing and making the little light flash. Heres whats running right now:

and here is a shot of MSConfig

I have no idea what those blank things are, but they're not checked...

My system is:
ECS K7S5A Mobo
AMD XP1800+
768mb PC2100 DDR
GF3 Ti200 128mb
80gb 7200rpm hard drive (Partitioned into 2 40gb drives.)

anyone have any ideas why my computer boots so slowly?

Thanks.

I reckon its trillian. Don't ask me why but my laptop takes ages to load trillian, try removing it from the startup and testing it

Sounds to me like a networking related issue. Have you looked in the networking settings to see if it's trying to do something silly, like log onto a Domain ? Might be worth removing all network protocols and services and seeing if this makes a difference, and then re-installing them one by one until you find the offending service.

Worth a try ?

Try taking the nic from autodetect speed and set it to 10 or 100 etc

Then reboot and see how it goes.

Are you logging into a domain?

Sounds to me like its your dns settings if you are...

The network card is connected to my cable modem (SB4100) and i have no idea if its logging in to a domain, these are the things checked in the connections propteries

Client For Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Sheduler
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

Do i need all those?

in TCP/IP, the DNS Setting is "Obtain DNS Server address automatically"

Are you using NTL on your SB4100 (like me) ?
If so, I have the DNS server entry set to assigned, those being:

194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

With regard to the other bits in your network, you could get rid of the packet scheduler, although it's unlikely this is causing your problem. Try the DNS thing first, and let us know if this sorts it.

Mare :(

Next thing - in your MSConfig startup you have Norton Antivirus (navapw32) and Zone Alarm Pro. Try de-selecting these and starting the machine - see if these are causing your problem.

In your original post you say the D:\ drive capacity has gone down from 30Gb to 9Gb after installing RAM - this don't sound right either - can you find what is occupy all the space since the upgrade - is it the swap file ? Have you tried de-fragging the D:\ drive and doing a scandisk ?

Running out of ideas here :(

Yeah, i diddnt word it right, I bought the RAM and network card at the same time, and since then the only thing thats really changed on the system is the amount of free space on D:\

try these, as you are on XP they might help

1. Go here and configure your services, this can normally knock some time off your system startup

2. Try MS's BootVis. This can speed up your start time a large amount, it works on XP but not sure about XP with SP1 installed.

Also what version of ZoneAlarm are you running, and is your XP installation pre or post SP1
