they can put missiles in my garden, as long as I get to select the targets.

The olympics went past more trouble than worth exactly 125 days a go

Better safe than sorry. Would rather see a ground to air missile take out a plane than see it crash into the stadium. Chances are if the thing is ever deployed it will never be fired as it is part of a air defence plan.

Wont the missile batteries be a tempting target to terrorists in their own right?

I completely disagree, if you've got anti air missiles hanging around your capital city to be fair, it makes your country look like it's not safe in the first place, I also read that they're planning to have helicopters with snipers in them, seriously?

Do we really not trust our intelligence that much to protect us at such an important event?

Intelligence will only go so far. It's prudent plan for the worst.

The helicopters will not be flying with snipers in them all the time. I would assume they are training in that as a quick reaction force should anything happen.

Got a letter a in the post recently about them considering putting the same missiles on the common by my house (by Greenwich park) seems a bit ridiculous to me. Apparently the officers guarding them won't be allowed weapons either which made me laugh.

A Starstreak missile (which I presume is what they're using as its the standard British HVM) only has an effective range of 1.5-5KM, so if they take out anything likely to hit the Olympic Stadium its going to land on another heavily populated area anyway.

Wont the missile batteries be a tempting target to terrorists in their own right?

It does seem a bit weird to let people know where they're deploying, which makes me think these locations aren't real. A Starstreak can be deployed as a MANPAD system, but usually they're on launch rails or vehicles (because they're fairly chunky).

As above. It seems odd that they're letting the public know. More sensible to have the real missiles on a perimeter ring further out unless they think terrorists have access to UAVs now.

Same logic that puts police officers with machine guns inside busy stations - I mean if they ever open up with that thing during the rush hour they will kill masses anyway so how is that usefull?

Not analogous at all. Cops aren't supposed to run around spraying automatic weapons fire all over the place, but once you knock down a plane you can't control the debris.

The thing is out of the two it would still be the preferred option.

Guys seriously?

It's all smoke and mirrors. They don't actually believe they will need to use them but by saying hey look we have big guns on top of this flat here now gtfo they are hoping for a deterrent.

It's the exact same reason why "Cops with guns" are around stations/airports etc..

Smoke and mirrors.

Its not a deterrent though, is it, if a bunch of geeks on a forum can see its lies then its not going to stop a bunch of terrorsists doing stupid shit. I think we should just get typhoons patrolling the skies, besides it will be like fly overs, constantly!

At least if it does happen, I'll be able to watch the whole thing in HD 3D from the comfort of 200 miles away.

If nothing goes wrong Typhoons will just stay on alert. They will only be over the skies of London for a fly over or because Radar picks up a threat. The mobile missile sites should just be replaced by a type 45 in the Thames that is it's job anyway :)
