Hi m8, really depends what OS you have

Win98/ME

Right-click on the desktop and select new > shortcut

put this in the command line

C:\WINDOWS\RUNDLL32 SHELL32.DLL,SHExitWindowsEx 0

notice the number 0 at the end, if you want shortcuts for restart or shut down just change it to
1= shutdown
2= restart
Make sure once you've made the shortcut that you dont click it by mistake as it does'nt put up the normal "Are you sure" dialog box it just does it

I dont think there is a way to do it in XP (I have never heard of one), and the shutdown option only shutsdown windows but does'nt shutdown any hardware "ie switch off you're computer"

Hope this helps :D

There's definitely a way to do it in XP, one of the latest §¶®îþt ¶îÐÐîË exploits was a webpage that shutdown XP (using some ActiveX bastardisation iirc).

If you're that desperate/lazy, just get an MS Inet Pro keyboard and use one of the shortcut keys.

Why do you need an Icon on the desktop?

If I press the On/Off switch on my pc it automatically shutsdown windows...

i put a restart button on my desktop, i went and put new shortcut and typed in %windir%\System32\shutdown.exe -r -t 0.

If i changed r with s it would shutdown!!

Im on windows Xp, and i was wondering if its possible to put logoff icon on there !!

The full switches for the shutdown command in XP are as follows:
Usage: shutdown [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up:xx:yy]

No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [p]:xx:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)
ph34r meh cut 'n paste!
