Cordless mice have been kicking round for a while now and I've never personally wanted to get one because of the need to replace batteries in the mouse and the poor performance in gaming due to power saving features which tended to produce movement lag.

I had heard good things about the Logitech MX700 and in terms of specs it seemed to have it all taken care of, but how does it really perform.

Ooer a pretty box, a mouse can only be sold on box looks alone to stupid people ;)

The contents includes:

Logitech® MX™700 Cordless Optical Mouse
Receiver/charging base
2 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries
AC adapter
USB to PS/2 adaptor
MouseWare® software
Documentation

I personally used USB to connect the receiver/charging base to my PC. The receiver/charging base is not powered off the USB socket as there isn't enough power for that, an AC adapter is required. The AC adapter plugs in to the top part of the USB plug which means only the one wire needs to come off the receiver/charging base and thus makes it look tidier.

The mouse itself is nice to hold with a one piece plastic top and rubber sides, all which gives the result of a nice looking mouse. The mouse doesn't quite feel right until you put in the batteries and it then feels perfectly weighted and solid.

In total the mouse has eight buttons and scroll wheel all of which seem well placed and can be reached without great movement of the hand.

The receiver/charging base is where this mouse really sets itself apart from the competition. You'll no longer need to replace the batteries all the time as the 2 AA NiMH rechargeable batteries are recharged via the base, this is automatically done when you place the mouse in the base.

The base also provides the other important feature, connectivity through Fast RF. This is a major improvement over the original forms of communication between wireless mice and receivers which often helped to make them sluggish and have limited range.

This first page just lets you know what you have the buttons currently set to do when pressed. It also allows you to decide whether to have a little taskbar icon displayed.

log8.jpg

This is the basic pointers screen that can be used by most mice via Windows control panel.

log9.jpg

The number of different functions you can assign to a button is impressive, you can also adjust the double click speed.

log10.jpg

The Smart Move function is novel but I find it of very little use since all it does is place your pointer at the OK button of apps etc, should they even have an OK button.

log11.jpg

A battery meter is always useful but the MX700 really doesn't need it in some ways since the batteries will easily last a day.

Just a little info on your driver version, atm the CD shipped with the package seems to be 9.75 although the newer 9.76 can be downloaded off the Logitech website.

I personally have a problem that whenever I used the scroll wheel and had Windows Media Player going it would skip on songs, sadly not sorted by reinstallation of Mouse software with no programs/taskbar apps running while installing...as suggested by Logitech - Hopefully some info on this soon.

In terms of gaming this mouse has so far been more than a match for my weird Microsoft IntelliMouse Explorer 3.0. I've not noticed any lag problems or any problems at all for that fact when playing games like RTCW:ET. It has also done well in a number of other games that I've played, although it still takes a little getting used to the slightly different feel.

It took me some time to get used to the mouse since I often found myself reaching for it even though it was still in the recharging base, which I guess is natural if you've used a wired mouse for so long.

The MX700 will cost nearly £50 to buy and thus is one of the most expensive mice around at the moment, although it does leave the competition behind with is abilities and certainly beats mice like the non rechargeable MS Wireless Intellimouse Explorer for Bluetooth.

I've been using Logitech cordless mice for about 5 years now, I have to say they are the best things since sliced bread. My original one, which I still own, is similar in shape to that one u posted, but is white, and has 3 buttons.

My latest (the glidepads failed on the first one) is this:

37.gif

I emailed Logitech about the glidepads on the old one, they didn't do them anymore so they offered to replace it, by sending my old one to them. I said I couldn't do without the old one for that long (3 weeks) so they sent a new one, with a bag to return the old one. I didn't like the new one as much (and told them so), so they said keep it.

So I did. Hehe.

I've said it before and I say it again: MX700 owns you all. Most useful birthday present I've had for a long long time!

I do recommend the 9.76 driver update though. Though mine only came wih 9.70 which were very buggy with the scroll buttons - especially in games - the 9.76s are dream. It also makes the "Down" button work in Mozilla :)

personally...

I think they are total dross. Heavy, very unresponsive, and almost useless for gaming. Stick to a Intellimouse 3.

I got about 40 mice from logitech themselves, and whilst the mx500s are quality, the wireless ones really dont feel very nice at all.

(note: I still love, logitech, their wheels, speakers, joypads, etc etc are all very welcome, but this mouse is poor).

Cool post, Emb. :) Does anyone else use the utility Sibanac posted? If so, and if it's any good, then shall I add it to the Drivers and Utilities thread? It certainly sounds like a useful utility.

Kind Regards

Hi Yaka

I don't use the Logitech mouse myself, but have you tried checking in the drivers for a mouse wheel option? Sometimes there is an option which allows you to set how many lines are scrolled at a time. If there isn't any such feature present, then TweakUI may be able to help (available in the
Drivers and Utilities
thread).

Kind Regards

Yes I used to. I updated to 9.76 drivers and it was ok again.

Do try altering the "number of lines" from 1 to 3.

Failing that, reinstall the drivers maybe? All I can say is that it can be made to behave, I just didn't keep track of what I did! I believe drivers will do it...

thats first time ive seen proper pics of the MX700... looks nice, altho i have the MX500 i cant help but notice that on the bottom of the mouse the left side has started to wear down considerably.. so its started sticking and stuff.

Thats really thye only problem (minor) that ive come across so far, apart from the shitty drivers

Yay,

Had a mx700 for about erm, 6months now i think.

I think its great, responsive, good range and I've never had the betteries run dry on me.

Downside:

Going to a LAN soon, where I know there are at least 3 more, and they only have 2 channels :( Gonna take a spare mouse I think.) Or we'll have to sit at the 4 corners. Although it'll be fun to walk round with it and change channels, I suppose.

nice review emb cheers I've been debating whether to get the MX500 or 700 (basically I wanted the 700 but was worried about performance) so I think I might.......... *few minutes later* Just ordered one :D

Well, I'm unlikely to be an expert on judging this, but going from an MS Wheel Mouse Optical to the MX700 I didn't notice any difference. That might be because I'm shit at games though.

In a desktop environment though I've never had the slightest problem. And I find games are flawless too, I'm always worried that someone more hardcore than me would be able to tell the difference and shout at me though... heh

Hello :)

To be honest, I believe only professional or hardcore gamers will ever push their mouse hard enough to be able to tell the difference between a wired and wireless mouse. For most users, as (Shovel) says, everything will be fine. Only when you begin to be concerned with per-pixel aiming, and increasing mouse sensitivity beyond the maximum normally allowed in game, will a difference ever become apparent (and even then it's probably minor).

Strongly disagree - I REALLY would try this mouse out before you buy if your a gamer. We got some in at work from Logitech. Took me 2 days to shit can it in favour of my Intellimouse 3.
Put it this way, I felt ripped off (having made myself look average during our games of UT), and I got the mouse for free.

Infact, I ended up giving it away and using the old un.

Really really poor.

I didn't notice any difference for gaming from an Intellimouse V3 going to a Logitech MX700. And I'd like to think of myself as retired hardcore.

For a few days it was weird, just getting used to the shape and weight, but after a few weeks, I was kicking ass and taking names again.

Funny that, it seems you're trying to increase the number of negatives of this mouse by posting twice :p :p

No, Im just trying to give an honest, if different, point of view from a good fps player. I'm also trying to point out that I get hardware free, so I'm not trying to "convince myself" that I've gotten a good mouse.

Just a note, I love most logitech gear, their wheels, speakers and wireless controllers are all very very high quality. And whilst this mouse was excellent quality, I just didn't think it measured up for gaming.

My advice, try it first. That is all.

Don't tease him Emb :p I must admit I love my Intellimouse, so much so that I recently bought another one rather than paying the premium for the Logitech kit. But at the end of the day, I don't think you'd be too disappointed whatever you bought.

or a different club :) anyway, I'm partial to a good mouse, even though I tend to play games like morrowind, NwN and suchlike these days. Perhaps HL2 will change all that again :)
Right now I have a bog standard logitech, and tbh I hate it already :/

bleh, MX 700 may well be the finest wireless mouse around, but it prolly ain the strongest.

the wheel makes a horible scarping sound when pushed forward. and in games/IE/MS word some times keeps scrolling forwad when just given a little tap.
