If you're having trouble logging in;

First things first, go to Minecraft and try to log in in the browser. If you fail there, contact support as you might've been hackered.

Second, change your password even if not

Third, download the new minecraft launcher from Minecraft

Should be fine after, or it's not your problem.

Getting the cant resolve hostname thing, is that because im no longer whitelisted or the server is down?

You are on the whitelist. After 1.8 - the logging part with minecraft.net have seemed to be a littlebit buggy! So try to close and open the browser a couple of times. And make sure the ip is spelled correctly

Yeah, but everyone is connected through minecraft.net anyway. Through the standard port they use! Have you tried to see if there is any other servers you can connect too?
