Is it just me or is the load times for getting Half Life 2 loaded up rather cacky?

For instance when im gonna start playing HL2, load up steam and click on HL2, and the time it takes to get to the main screen i could go make a cup of tea, from cold water and it would probably just start to get onto the main screen then.

Then i click on the load icon, and it will take about a minute to load up, but after loading has commenced i get hit with a bit of insta-lag for a few movements while walking around which isnt helpful.

Also when it loads up a new area, on the airboat it loads new areas and i end up just crashing into walls because of where i was. Oh so fun.

Does anyone else maybe experience this? Its really the only time the lagginess kicks in so could be a bug?

Running on a AMD XP 2100 with FX5200 and only get a stutter on new areas for a split second. Loadtimes are around 15-25 seconds depending if its loading a indoor or outdoor area.

50 seconds from clicking on 'Play Half Life 2' until the main menu appears (my system is almost identical to Throddy).

Loading a level from 'Our Benefactors' - 15 seconds.

I have the 'no jump' bug so that's as far as I can get.

Takes ages for me too. My AMD 2500+ is clocked to 2500MHz, so that's like 3400+ or so? I have 1GB ram, this should be plenty. I doubt my Radeon 9800 Pro can help much with loading times - it's just a graphics card innit? I'm going to buy a WD Raptor (10k rpm) and a 6800GT and see if it helps anyway.

There are apparently some variables to help, one of which is -heapsize on the command line, which allows different amounts of RAM to be used for caching.

Also, the stuttering bug from Erik Johnson at Valve:

We've found a fix for this problem, and we're planning on shipping it no later than tomorrow.

Open your valve.rc file and delete the last line. It stops it loading the animated scene in the background which cuts down initial loadtimes like mad.

A bit more help, for those with the stuttering of the texture loads. A patch is on its way by tomorrow at the latest.
