little problem with hl etc...

hello all!

I'm having some probs with HL and C-strike.
They both seem to crash on an alarmingly quick basis, especially cs which crashes after each level change.

Now I heard about the "list entry" error, but does anyone get just plain, system freeze crashes?

Now It might be to do with my setup: i'm using a geforce prophet with the leaked nvida drivers (5.17 i think)

With the previous 5.x drivers stability was real bad, but it seems better with the 5.17 ones, but there may still be problems.

So has anyone had any probs with a geforce and the leaked 5.x drivers? especially with games like HL.

Any help would be appreciated!

You lose a PHYSICAL part of the game? How is that possible?

Probably more likely is illegally terminating the process causes a writeback of some bad data to some game file somewhere. There's probably a file (or two) in your hl directory that updates itself every time you play, and when you crash it gets knackered.

I can't think of any way that a bit of program data can actually get lost into RAM... its not like a game is temporarily moved from your hard disk into RAM when you play it, and then moved back.

Actually, one thing I did notice (played CS for the first time on the weekend at fatty's house - addicted to the bloody thing now :))...

At some times, for some reason, the menus start going really slow. Like, REALLY slow. (The options menus that is, not the weapons buying ones in the mod). HL does seem to be a bit overly bugged :/

Considering you've got a geforce tho (and they're notorious for it)... it's not the old "not enough power" problem is it? Do you get the same problem in Q3 by any chance?

I've got a Coppermine/BE6-2/Geforce DDR system. Q2 runs fine, but Q3 (and some other games) suffer from severe texture rip, flicker, and crashing. Turns out the card wasn't getting enough power from the mobo. I just increased the I/O voltage by .1, and it was fine.

umm... you seem to have crashed the game too many times, according to a well read mate of mine whenever hl crashes ingame you loose a physical part of the game (a bit like getting lost in the RAM). so you prolly need to reinstall :(

actually stu's probably right, when you crash the game shitloads it just refuses to leave the desktop.

ahhhhhh!

I do experience texture ripping in Q3 - seems when i move too quick the textures dont - it's hard to explain really
No thrashing probs though - the leaked drivers sorted it out. some flicker though, although this may just be q3 at full detail in high res - maybe not

Quite a few games do crash though - i dont bother with much pre geforce as tings hardly ever work.

ermmm - how do ya find out if the ol geforce aint getting enough power?
