I currently run Freeserve ADSL via an Alcatel SpeedTouch modem.

I'm trying to figure out how I can network it internally so my housemate can get off his 56k connection.

Anyone got any ideas as to the best way to go about this?

Cheers :D

All you need my friend is -

  • Couple of lenghs of CAT5 (cable)
  • A hub/switch
  • Network cards in both machines
  • Internet Connection sharing (part of Win98(?), WinME, Win2k, WinXP) on the machine with the ADSL connection

You can buy networking kits (pcworld.co.uk) that should sort a networking newbie out

Yeah, good stuff Jas. I have an internal network. This is what I have:

- D-Link 10/100MB Router with build in firewall and software
- D-Link 10/100MB Network Card on each of the 3 machines.
- Windows 98SE on my comp, and 98ME on the other 2.
- Unsielded Twisted Pair (UTP) Cables to connect the machines together.

Runs awesome, I play with my bro on the internal network a lot. Awesome. Download times between the 2 comps are 100MB in about 3-5seconds. Great stuff but the routers like $200CDN.

Questions? Ask me!
