Life sucks when work is quiet

Last year I did 150 days of work. At an average £220 a day, thats not bad going, and affords me a nice standard of living. The trouble for me is that 30 of those days were on an F1 contract, and a further 15 were on the WRC, both jobs which, in the case of F1, won't be happening this year, and the WRC, is unlikely.

Add to this the fact that so far this year I've been working an average of 1 day per week, and you can understand why I only got 3hrs sleep today. Thats why I'm writing this now.

I've got myself some guaranteed work lined up so far this year, but only about 1/2 of what I had last year. Maybe some work on a feature film, but only if they get the budget together. Oh well, at least I can work on my house while its quiet.

I thank my stars I don't live in Madagascar or somewhere equally dreadful, but dammit I don't often have sleepless nights like tonight.

Its not like I'm going to lose my house or anything, my mortgage is only £6000 a year, and I can easily cover that, but I just wondered what the hell you guys with mortgages do in times like this, especially considering that with a staff job, you can be 'out' at any time?

No problem with mortgages here, I can't even afford one in the first place ;)

How come your not going to do F1 any more?

I had a contract with FOM, who supplied the pay-per-view digital coverage of F1 racing. It was on Sky last year, but its been going for quite a few years. Basically, Bernie pulled the plug on this year's coverage because it was losing lots of money, and he couldn't get the host broadcast in every grand prix (the footage you see on ITV is produced by each country that hosts it), so he ditched it. It might be coming back in 2004, but I don't hold out that much hope.

I still get to do some corporate F1 work with a separate contact, for instance I was in Barcelona in January filming McLaren testing, and I might get some work with Jordan F1 this year.

The F1 paid quite well, £280 a day, and with 30 days, thats not a bad little earner, so I'm gonna miss it.

Contract work = not good.

My company employs a lot of IT contractors, they are "leaving" in droves, the 10% pay cut didn't help, especially when it was on top of a 5% cut followed by a 10% cut last year.

The smart ones are "converting" to permanant positions.

Tom, let me get this straight.

You go to places like Barelona and film racing cars.
You are going to earn 15 grand for 75 days work.
You don't wear coke bottom glasses anymore.

And you've got it bad how?

:p

Tom,

Im maybe a little bit naive here, but I dont worry about whats gonna happen tomorrow.

I have a steady(ish) job where ive worked for the last 13 years. If the company decide to make me redundant, then they will cough up about £45,000 - which should last me long enough to find another job.

On top of that, insurance will pay for the mortgage for the first x months.

My thoughts are - why worry about tomorrow, we have enough problems with today. I could get killed on the way home by some drunk driver - whats the use worrying ?

Well, that figure for 75 days would be my turnover, not my profit. I'm still waiting for a producer/director to come along and offer me an entire series of programmes, or a kickass documentary. At the moment I am very much a jobbing cameraman/soundman.

And Barcelona was f00kin freezing!

Thats the thing about contract jobs though isnt it. Same as commision based jobs. You earn well when you're working, because you , by the nature of the job, don't always earn well...
Ill stick with my £140 a day, every day thanks very much :)

I have sickness/accident/disablement insurance cover, but income protection insurance....hmmm....I don't think that would be worthwhile.
