... does one have to complete the final quest to kill Strom? I ask as my current pc just can't cope with the quest. All those red hand guards running about make it lock up and I come back dead.

I can try again next week when I get my new system but it will make for a very frustrating wait unless there is a work-around or way to leave the island without doing this quest.

And I hit level 20 if that matters...

Talk to your class trainer and see if he allows you to skip the destiny quest? There was an option for that when I was level 17 and had to do level 10 and 15 destiny quests atleast.

What system you currently playing on as i am wondering if it will actually be worth installing the game on my current system and wasting 2 weeks of my free month

P4 650 3.4 GHz
2048 MB DDR2 memory
ATI X600 video card

I'm guessing it is the video card that is letting me down, but I am unpacking my new system as we speak. Err, as I type. Performance on my old system was utter turd in places -- down to 2-4 FPS.
