Latest patch problems.

Since installing this latest patch my q3 has gone from a perfect smooth game, just like the single player, to a lagy nightmare. I put the lagometer on this morning, for the first time in literally years, and it showed a regular yellow spike like a sharks fin running across the middle of the chart. My ping goes from its normal 50-odd up to 2oo or so, and then back. Anyone know what this is all about? It is just since the latest patch.
My settings are, from memory,
rate 7000
snaps 30
fps 125 (constant)
maxpackets 63
I use single isdn, and have checked a couple of isp's, and it does it with both.
Also i have noticed that when I turn on q3 without the net connected, (for single player) , it trys to turn on the net connection, and hangs the game. Any ideas anyone ? :)

Set pb_sleep to 500 in your config. This should stop/reduce the playing laggyness.

Maxpackets 63 seems a little high for single channel isdn. Are you certain that in the new patch you are getting a constant 125 fps too? From past experience, a new patch=lower fps (or further gfx tweakage to ensure you get your capped fps still).

Athlon xp2.0+ , 512 ddr ram and GF4 4400 128 mb ddr memory. It does 210 fps avarage on the std timedemo. It'l easy do 125 all day long no matter what :)
I set maxpackets 63 as a divisor of the 125 fps. Worked perfectly before the last patch. :(

pb_sleep to 500

That's a Punkbuster cvar, which some people find helps with the lag...

Actually i was just looking at the ucguide today, but didnt see that bit. Oh well I check it out now!

Does this only happen on Punkbuster servers?

If so, try reducing cl_maxpackets to the next lowest divisor to allow for bandwidth used by Punkbuster.

Its funny I always thought I never played q3, yet when I havent got it I realise how much I miss it :/
Ive tried pb_sleep 400/500/600, and snaps 20 30 40, but not maxpackets yet, Ill try it tonight, you never know .
I even tried a complete fresh install too, but no difference.

edit,
having said that, the reinstall would have had maxpackets set as std whatever that is, so I doubt changing that will help.

Ok, for anyone who's still listening, tried it on all different settings, but makes no difference.
Except one setting. Punkbuster. Turn that off and all preoblems are fixed :/
What can I do ?

I can't reproduce the problem here, broadband and no problems =/

Out of interest can you setting pb_sleep to a lower value so that updates are more frequently; possibly stopping sudden lag spikes every xx ms. Try the following:

pb_sleep "30"

What type of lag do you experience with a lower setting? sudden lag spikes, constant lag but no spikes? etc.

Req Ive stuck with pb_sleep 500 and it seems now to be improving, only the smallest yellow bits now. Dunno why, but there you go.

I tried 1.32 quickly on a TeamArena server, with pb enabled... I did notice alot of lag for 5 minutes or so, however then i got a HUGE lag spike. I think that was the PB updating itself, because once it'd done, i saw something about PB in the console; I also noted, that the lag went away after this update.

I heard about how the first 10mins or so of a game will be laggy till PB updates itself, perhaps this is what i've experienced. Would it be possible, to get around this by setting the PB sleep mathingy low at first, so it updates itself at the start of the game, and then set it to 500 once it's done updating, so you don't have to put up with a laggy 10mins? Or is the update thingy and lag i noticed differant to the pb_sleep stuff?

Shocko, it's certainly annoying =O| The setting for pb_sleep is in ms, 500 is half a second.
