Last cple of weeks or so ive been getting constant lag ingame, basically unplayable. It effects everything though not just ingame, web browsers are slow loading, connecting to ftps etc etc.

We use an adsl router (SMC7204BRA), rebooting that seems to fix the issue for a while (anywhere from 5mins to 5hours), then it kicks back in again. An example of the sort of lag would be:

Reply from 193.252.123.177: bytes=32 time=1612ms TTL=47
Reply from 193.252.123.177: bytes=32 time=379ms TTL=47
Reply from 193.252.123.177: bytes=32 time=2111ms TTL=47
Reply from 193.252.123.177: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=47

after a router reboot theyre down to 15-30ms. Noones hammering the router as far as I can tell though its own f/w appears to be disabled (not the most user friendly interface on it) and while I realise that theres alot of server lag around atm this is more than that, its pretty much constant yellow/red lag.

Download speeds arnt usually effected, can still dl at 100k/s but sometimes that also takes a hit seeing speeds of as little as 2k/s. The router doesnt appear to have any firmware/driver updates, it did work fine for well over a month and tbh im running out of ideas as to what it could be :( O and its not effected by time of day so its not server load or something .. happens all day long.

Doh

Sounds like either:

a) ADSL Interface broken (mucho packet loss)
b) some Bugger in memory (sucks bandwidth)

I reckon u checked response b so to check if Router is gone or your ISP is blamable i'd suggest to ping plot an outside IP and check where the packet loss starts.

Just my 2 cents.

the router may be logging packets how many you are getting and how many you ahve sent. After a while this can become to big and create a buffer overflow. I had it once with my router after 6months and didnt know what was happening but after clearing those log's on the router it worked ok again.

if i do a tracert when its lagging find that the hop times vary drastically .. anything from 30ms to 1000 .. starting at the first stage from the router. Now whether that implies ISP or router I dunno :E

bleh its not actually lagging at this exaact moment (has been the last hr though ><) so cant paste one.

Well if u got a small internal network (so router has an ethernet interface) could be either your network card / cable fault, this would explain the randomness of the lag.
