Okay isn't this a bit too far fetched? I am talking about the latest Tom Cruise movie btw. Now I thought the Japanese were strongly isolanionists (sp?). It does make me think that Hollywood is desperate for making movies tho.

At first I thought it was going to be a hollywood rip off, of the supposedly true story of a British ship wrecked sailor who became a samarai. There used to be a BBC series called Shogun about it.

Owned.

The TV series wasn't "that" bad.... but the book was amazing.

No, this actually happened (not the story in this film, but US in 19th Century Japan). The Americans 'opened up' Japan in 1854 - there was a naval expedtion led by Commodore Perry that basically ended Japanese isolationism and put them on the road to modernisation, which is why within fifty years they could whup the whole Russian Pacific fleet.
