Laser Squad Nemesis Challenge

heh, i dunno if this is the place for this, but the only other place that was suitable was the web-based strategy games forum - which i saw hadn't had any activity for 30 days, so i thought bugger THAT! anyway;

some of you n00bs will have heard about Laser Squad Nemesis, Lasersquad was the precursor to X-Com and this is a new email based, turn-based strategy game... costs $15 / 6 months to challenge people etc... it's free to receive challenges... anyway; i was wondering, does anyone already subscribe to it, and would they be willing to challenge me to a game of it, so i can see what it's like before parting with the readies. plz. thx :p

epic ignorance

hmm where to begin;

Exor:
i'm not gonna start something i have to pay for, if i can check it out for free first am i? dickhead. you don't just buy a car without test driving it do you?

Munkey:
i thought better of you - why can't you term them games? they meet all the criteria of games.... and if you read our games magazines, pc zone or pc gamer for example, then you'd realise that both magazines have given LSN rave reviews - but then, your probably not old enough to appreciate the X-Com series of games, let alone laser squad.

so why exactly do i have to respect you again?

Jas:
it's not lag is it muppet? that's just the way the game works. i really don't know why i bother, if your going to be such losers don't bloody reply - i asked for help from someone, not lame flames from gaming non-cognoscenti

bigbb:
/me waves, nice to see you not joining in the idiot rush.

How is the time it takes to get a response from a server defined then?

response time

there is no response time from the server. it works via email. direct peer to peer. i email you with my moves, you receive them in your email, run an attachment or whatever, and your copy of the game (or however it works - i believe you have a small client though) shows you what i've done, you get to respond with your moves, and you email them back to me.

assuming you don't have some shoddy email provider it's pretty much instantaneous, and can be played as fast as you like. i don't know about you, but my openworld dsl email account is very fast, and i usually get emails seconds after they are sent.

so how is that lag exactly? if you don't know anything about it, and don't want to know... what are you doing here annoying me? p!ss off back to your primary school.

Looks like sophisticated chess. Quite good to be able to play a game in-between work/eating/pr0ning/sleeping I suspect, be able to consider and deliberate over moves. Just because it's not the conventional gaming experience doesn't necessarily mean it's shit. :)

I like it when people attempt to resort to personal insults

I've never heard a BT mail server described as fast before, unreliable maybe... but not fast

Your thinking of lag as ping, here is the actual definition -

The delay in information coming across the network through telnet or other types of connections, usually caused by a slow or error-prone connection somewhere between the two communicating machines

mostly (by the sounds of it) you'd be waiting for the opponent to respond, not a server... therefore it's not lag as such...

Munkey, I'm surprised with your response... seems like you found out the url for the bodhi-flame-o-matic :rolleyes:

I prefer to have multiplayer games with instant interaction, not having to resort to email.

Anyway, if the client is free to d/l, and all moves are carried out over email - what exactly are you paying for?

As BB said it sounds like a glorified uber-chess, which ain't a bad thing at all, but you're doing yourself absolutely no favours acting like a complete and utter wanker "Wolfeeh". And as Exor said, it's only £10 fer chrissakes, the price of 2 PC mags for 6 months gaming. Isn't it worth it just to check it out? It'll hardly bankrupt ya.

And your response to Jas's statement of preference just goes to show your lack of maturity.

Gaming non-cognescenti? How long exactly have you been playing games? I've been playing them since before you were born, so don't even go there.

Dignified response

first off;
Laser Squad Nemesis official web-site:
www.lasersquadnemesis.com

bigbb; that's exactly it mate. it's chess on a more interesting and grand scale. for X-Com fans. no it's not everyone's cup of tea. of course some people like a more immediate form of multiplayer game... i play Tribes 2, Counterstrike etc.... that doesn't mean that it doesn't have it's place... you've hit on the essence of it exactly though, it's something you play with a mate, while exchanging emails or whatever on a boring day. no it's not a massive community orientated thingy. anyway, enough on that matter. on to the response;

i'm not a massive forum poster, there's probably some way to say how many posts i've made or something, but i don't know what. i use the forums when i need to ask something like i have, or to respond to a friend's post, anyway that's not the point. i've been a Barrysworld user for like 2-3 years, i'm constantly in IRC, and gain significantly more respect than i have here. as bigbb knows, because he's in my T2 clan. but to post what i have, and be greeted with outright hostility... how else do you expect me to react? i don't know *exor* from adam, he could be a typical flame child for all i know, which is what he looks like.... why i'm so horrified though, is i *do* know munkey, and have done for 8 months or so on IRC, i've never been anything but polite to him, and he's never had a bad word to say to me. yet he reacts like this on a public forum... i think i'm allowed to be a little hostile in my response. which is why i responded to a personal insult to Jas, who again like the other two, start on me for no reason.

and what exactly is wrong with a BT mail server? i've never had anything wrong with mine. i get an average 20 ping in most online games from my BT DSL line. maybe he's another of these children with a pointless grudge against BT, microsoft, etc.

Sar:
i assume is a moderator for a reason - if only because he can kiss ass with the best of them - i know how BW works :) but i suppose he deserves a response too;

the point is you are not "resorting" to email - it is the entire focus of the game - so that it can be played over time, widespread compatibility, etc.

the game is not free, because someone had to program it, time is money. or are you one of these warez freaks too, who refuses to acknowledge that games cost money to develop. if you want to develop a game and distribute it freely, go right ahead.

responding harshly when two people one of whom i know, is not acting like a complete and utter wanker. a complete and utter wanker is someone who flames someone who has a perfectly valid post; *exor* and munkey. not many people who know me on IRC would use your definition for what *i* am.

the reason i'm not going to pay money to check it out, is because i can check it out for free. maybe your absolutely rolling in it. i'm not. i'm by no means a peasant, but if i can check out a subscription game for free, via a challenge from some friendly stranger, then i'm not going to pay am i?

how long have i been playing games? let's see. a good 12-13 years. maybe you have been playing them longer. who cares. i've been playing them for more than half of my 21 year life. and to be honest, i don't know why you are a moderator if you feel it your duty to join in the flaming of a perfectly respectable post.

the. end.
it's the last time i phrase a perfectly decent question on here, because i've had it up to here (me raises hand well above head) with newbie faggots like you lot. *waves @ bigBB - rispeck!*

Respectable? Your posts have been far from it. Not only are they riddled with various insults to people who hadn't even insulted you (In Jas's case he was stating his preference of games), they're also riddled with contradictions.

the game is not free, because someone had to program it, time is money. or are you one of these warez freaks too, who refuses to acknowledge that games cost money to develop. if you want to develop a game and distribute it freely, go right ahead.

the reason i'm not going to pay money to check it out, is because i can check it out for free. maybe your absolutely rolling in it. i'm not. i'm by no means a peasant, but if i can check out a subscription game for free, via a challenge from some friendly stranger, then i'm not going to pay am i?

Ok, so explain the complete and utter disparity in reasoning between those two statements please? In one you're advocating payment for the game, citing developer costs etc. In the other you're advocating NOT paying for the game because you can't be arsed to. Er...?

how long have i been playing games? let's see. a good 12-13 years. maybe you have been playing them longer. who cares.

Well apparantly you do:

i've been playing them for more than half of my 21 year life.

Anyway, I'm a moderator for a simple reason - I play Q3 and am online all day. Oh and I run a league as well, so I'm also moderator of the RA3 League forum too.

And you patently do not know me from adam either if you think I "kiss ass" in any way. Far from it.

And I wasn't flaming a perfectly respectable post, because tbh your posts are no better or worse than those you're whinging about.

PS: You're a fuckwit, kthnxbi.

How wrong could you be?

I have a BTo ADSL line at home, a BT.net kilostream in the office, hell - even my mobiles on BT Cellnet. Take a look in the broadband forum and you'll see me defending them! However - if I had to fault them it would be the mail server reliability

Oh - and I run Win2k Pro on my desktops and Win2k Server on my servers.

I don't know why you keep referring to me as a child - its not very original.
