Now that Im pootterless Ive had to use the old work laptop. How come its so quiet (Tbird processor but dont know which)?

Its completely silent and certainly doesnt run hot. Surely we should be able to build desktops which are just as quiet and easy to cool. Just curious

Well, the PSU is just a transformer which sits somewhere not very close to the machine, the power regulator is just the laptops battery (with some circitry controlling the operation), which gets quite warm.

The CPU's on laptops are all low-powered, and low heat (Edit: Low watts dissipated/ing), which is why they cost a bit more.

Also, they actually make use of HLT, which just clocks the cpu down to 200 or so mhz, whatever the machine requires at the time, which is why (such with any hardware), when you do something complex on a laptop, the small fan at the back will turn on.

Laptop HDD's are low RPM, and of less mass due to their size.

Afaik anyway, never had my own Laptop.

Novelty soon wears off.

My younger brother , who is a GP I might add, spent £2,500 on a Dell laptop with the new Nvidia card and an Athlon 4. He sits and plays CS and TFC online in his surgery when hes not busy. And who said that they were over worked pah!
