Laptop PC recommendations

Any strong recommendations for a good Laptop?

It's not going to be used for games at all just writing, digital photography & manipulation, a bit of surfing (mobile pr0n! :D), music and so on.

Any systems I should stay the hell away from?

This is another thing on my list for April, along with a new Digicam (which I've narrowed down to either a Canon Powershot S40, or a Pentax Optio 430).

:)

There was a similar thread in the Hardware/TechNation forum and Xavier had strongly recommended a new model he had been reviewing. I can't find the thread now, though. :/

Of course, If you'd posted in the correct forum...

(Bloody n00bs...)

Why do the digital editing on the laptop, when you have a desktop?

A piece of crap P166 laptop I have in the house, running on Debian, does all that you say there except the editing, an cost not a dime. A new laptop will set you back a pretty penny. Heh, but a nice new laptop would be sweet...

Basically so I can get away from my desk now and again, and still do some work etc.

Plus I can take it with me on holiday, and still write :D

I love the new iBooks- great for digital photo manipulation (and video too if you have one), for downloading music, and have option of CD writer or DVD player...

Don't think of it unless it really is digital image manipulation, the hardcore stuff. Not, the rotate image and put 'I love daddy' on it. They're not that good for much day to day stuff, from my limited experience.

Lol

I'm a pretty hardcore Photoshop 6.0 user, and would use it for art, serious photo retouching, montage work, creating banners & animated gifs, graphics for websites etc.

I'd like a PC laptop though, as I could install my existing copy of Photoshop etc onto it without having to buy new copies for a different OS.

Just bought myself a Dell Inspiron 8100 - 1.2Ghz P3M, ATI Radeon 7500M (64-Meg) DVD/CD-Writer blah blah blah....

Runs most things as good as, if not better than, my desktop (and that includes games).

Cost a pretty penny tho - nearly £1900. :(

My mate got a 2 grand Dell laptop as well. It's got all the bells and whistles and runs great. It looks good too, which helps.

Yer, I can't recomend the Dell 8100 enough

When I ordered it I had the feeling it may be a bit flakey like the 3800 we have at work. But after using it for the last 4months I can say I have been very impressed.

I got the 1.2ghz P3m with 512mb ram and the 48Gb 5400rpm HD with the DVD/CDRW etc...

I bought a Wireless network card for it and was shocked that I could just stick the thing on the network at work use it as normal then stick it in standby take it home and plug in the wireless card and have no conflicts or anything else

It plays games pretty well the GF2go allows MOHAA at 1024x768 with 75% of prettyness enabled and still get 40fps+

These UXGA Screens are very nice to :)

if you are a hard core photoshop user - the ibook would run it really well, but what would really scorch any other laptop (even the dells and vaios) under the table would be one the the G4 Titanium Powerbooks. - You get a G4 @ 550 or 667, and the thing absolutely motors. Will happily out perform a lot of deskbased system.

The only drawback is as you say the fact you would have to buy a new copy of photoshop, but with photoshop 7 on the horizon for Mac OS X you would be getting something that would shift and be stable.

email, internet, writing etc all easily handled, plus you get a 15.2" widescreen TFT @ 1152x768. Loads of room for those photoshop pallettes at the side.

Do I sound like i sell these to graphic designers ?? ;)

www.apple.com/powerbook

also forgot to mention if you are looking to do video editing on it - its the best platform by far, you have a 6 pin firewire connection on the back for DV capture, and imovie as standard. If you want more than that, you can run adobe premiere / aftereffects etc or go nuts with finalcut pro 3 - which is an amazing bit of software

check it out on apples webby.

if u want more info drop me an email dr-gonzo@11eight.co.uk

ROFL:

3D games push the graphics processing unit harder than any other application. And of these 3D games, Quake performance has come to be the benchmark against which all graphics processors are measured. So you’ll be pleased to hear that when playing the Quake III Arena version 1.30 in thousands of colors at 1024x768 resolution, the 667MHz PowerBook G4 blazes away at a scorching 44 frames per second.

Eek, laggy :p

Wouldn't be gaming on it anyway, but it does seem rather bloody sexy.

Cheers Doc, I shall give it some serious consideration, cos it looks very sweet.

As for the Digicam, I am well sorted.

I have a friend works in Jessops, and she told me she can get me the camera (Canon Powershot S40), a 128Mb CF memory card, case, and spare battery pack & charger for £596 on her staff discount.

The normal selling price for all of that is usually about £900 :D

you would get around 50+ fps on q3a with the g4 powerbook - 16mb radeon mobile u see

also 5hrs battery life (easily get 4 out of it on standard batt) so if wanting to be able to use it for long periods without power is a real bonus.

best bet is pop into local pc shop and have a gander :)
